MAKERS OF MATCHES AND CAKES

"Have you ever even seen snow?"

Seraphina walked through the school foyer with Sam. It was early December and the weather was still much too freakishly warm for her liking.

"Yes, I have seen snow!" Sam laughed. "I've been on skiing trips with my family."

"Ooh, rich girl, going on ski trips," Seraphina snorted.

"Hey, you live in Encino too!"

"Yeah, but the furthest I've ever been on vacation is Orlando. Or Italy to see my family. Oh my God!" Seraphina grabbed both of Sam's shoulders. "We should totally go to Disneyland!"

"Yes, we absolutely should!"

Seraphina released the girl from her grip and, when they continued walking, Sam ran right into a tall boy.

"Oh, sorry. I-" Sam started

"I'm sorry, Sam," said Miguel.

"No, I'm sorry. I should've been watching where I was going."

"Me too," Miguel chuckled, though Seraphina could see the sadness in his eyes.

"And I..." Seraphina, still riding out her excitement about Disneyland, struggled to find an excuse to leave. "I really have to pee, so...I'm gonna...go." And she hurried away.

She and Sam were both headed to study hall and, as much as she would have loved to stay within earshot of Sam's conversation with Miguel, she'd just have to weasel as much information out of Sam as she could later.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a couple necking each other across from the lockers. Another glance and her jaw hit the floor.

Yasmine had Demetri pressed up against a wall, hand cupping his face, tongue likely lost down his throat.

Seraphina could only stand and stare, mouth hanging open like a basking shark. Her blood pumped with so many feelings at once; anger that Demetri hadn't immediately told her that this was happening - after all, she had all but made this happen - still a little excitement about Disneyland, but ultimately an overwhelming amount of smug joy that her plan had finally worked.

"Sephi, are you okay?" Sam and Miguel had caught up with her, the girl brushing Seraphina's arm. "What are you staring at?"

Seraphina couldn't conjure even a single word. So, she just pointed.

"Yasmine?" Sam said, looking just as shocked.

At this, Yasmine stepped back, eyes wide. Demetri, however, looked in a perfect daze, like he'd quite happily died and gone to heaven.

"Hey, uh...We were just, uh..." he stuttered.

"Doing study work," Yasmine finished, in a way so unconvincing that Seraphina unfroze and gave a snort.
