BEGINNER'S LUCK

"Belle?" Seraphina yelled through the kitchen door. "Belle!"

But no answer came. She rolled her eyes, closed the camera on her phone and dialled her eldest sister. Isabella answered after a couple of seconds.

"Hello? Did you go out?"

"No, I'm in the kitchen. I need you to come down and help me."

"Why didn't you just shout?"

"I did. Get your butt downstairs."

Isabella appeared a minute later, wrapped up in her fluffy dressing gown, hair twisted in a knot on top of her head. "Don't you remember what happened last time you asked me to help you bake?"

"The baking's done." Seraphina gestured to the crate of cupcakes and then to the ceiling. "I can't do lighting."

A ravenous smile spread across Isabella's face. "You're taking photos for Instagram."

Seraphina pursed her lips, refusing to satisfy her sister with a response.

"These are the cutest!"

"Don't touch them!"

Seraphina had been up since before the crack of dawn preparing for her first day of training at Miyagi-Do. First, she had tempered two packets of chocolate, had piped tiny bonsai tree branches and stacked the trays in the fridge. Then, when the light was good enough, she washed and waxed her truck, then set to work baking. She had kept it simple; a vanilla sponge, with lemon buttercream icing and, after snapping a great number of the bonsai tree as she'd lifted them from the tray, Seraphina had finished the cupcakes off by piping little green stars on the branches to represent leaves. At which, several more of them broke.

"Okay, first of all, I love the crate. It's very rustic. But it does cast shadows over the edges of the batch. I think your best bet is to go for a shot focusing on one of the middle ones."

Seraphina just stared at her sister. After a minute or so of trying to wrap her head around what Isabella had said, she held out her phone. "Why don't you just take it?"

Isabella rolled her eyes. "Just this once. But you have to watch."

Seraphina watched her sister gently shift the crate around under the kitchen lights, taking a few snaps each time. Isabella then moved the crate over to under the window, but the sun hadn't come around to that side of the house yet, so apparently that was no go.

"What are you going to call your account?"

Seraphina sighed. "I don't know. I was thinking...Cakes By Sephi. But now I say it out loud it sounds totally lame."
