At times we can make several errors in a row, but often the second mistake, by some incomprehensible providence, only comes to rectify the first one. Or some other person does a stupud thing only to fix your previous blunders.

The first dumb thing Bob Nesbitt, a young promising scientist and my assistant, did was not to be present at the lab that morning. The night before he had left enough food and water in the cages for all the animals, then, early in the morning rushed to Bern airport to pick up his girlfriend, Ada Smith, who just arrived from New Jersey.

The village of Mürren is perched on top of a cliff at 1650 meters above sea level and is car-free. In order to get there the love birds took a train to Lauterbrunnen, then had a cable car ride to Grütschalp railway station, and finally a 15 minute electric train journey brought them to Mürren. Instead of going straight to the lab, Bob helped his sweetheart check into the hotel, where the couple had a fifteen minutes of passionate and furious sex in Ada's room, after that they donned their ski suits and left the hotel. They dropped by the rental center, where they got snowboards, boots, helmets and goggles. Then they took another cable car ride, this time up to the Schilthorn summit, where the famous rotating restaurant Piz Gloria is situated.

Bob had already made advance reservations there for so-called James Bond Brunch (which takes place daily till 2 p.m.), and after the couple picked up their dishes and two glasses of sparkling wine at the buffet, they sat down at their table.

Ada sipped some of her wine, looked out the window and said:

"What a romantic view with all these majestic Alps around."

"The view's continually changing," said Bob. "We're rotating along with the restaurant. We'll return to this very point in fifty five minutes. Okay, let's try these dishes."

Ada tasted some of her salad, then said:

"There's so much James Bond stuff about this place."

"They shot a Bond episode here in 1968," Bob explained. "They used this building as the hideout of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, a criminal mastermind and the archenemy of agent 007."

"That evil guy probably brewed his evil plans here, atop this summit," Ada looked around the restaurant.

"Blofeld kept a clinic here, where he allegedly treated a group of girls from different countries for various allergies, but in fact he brainwashed them to distribute bacteriological warfare agents throughout the world. He called them Death Angels, but then James Bond came over here, and as usual, after a series of feats, defeated the villain."

"You know, Bob," said Ada, "sometimes Professor Schlotheim seems to me, if not an old movie villain, then certainly some sort of mad scientist."

"Wrong impression, dear. I've been working with him for two years, and I can say.., well, I know some people take him for an oddball, but he's a genius."
