Chapter 2:

"Have fun in Toronto Saadharna (AN: Saadharan means plain in Hindi, Falak combined Saadharan and Sahana together to make Saadharna as a mean nickname), no matter how far you go, you'll still be a boring Jane. So don't even for a second think you're better than me just because you're about to be an NRI (AN: NRI means Non Resident of India)" Falak hissed as she stood by Sahana who was waiting to be called to board the plane.

Sahana closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She was NOT going to lose it or show any weakness today. Today was the day she'd begin her new life away from all these bullies. She couldn't wait to go explore the diversity of Los Angeles, go to the Walk of Fame, and best yet, finally go to DisneyLand! Instead of giving Falak the satisfaction of acting out, Sahana smoothed over her navy blue maxi skirt and fanned herself against the hot Delhi heat, which was still seeping through the airport despite the air conditioning.

*Would passengers on the Los Angeles 2:45pm flight please make their way to the boarding station, thank you*

Finally, with her heart lifting and her stomach in flip flops, Sahana hoisted up her carry on, and followed her parents and the rest of her family, who had come to see them off, to the boarding area.

Almost all the relatives were in tears as they said their final goodbyes. Sahana gave her older brother a hug and touched the feet of all the elders as a sign of respect before she finally headed into the plane.

She gave a sigh, full of relief, apprehension, happiness a mix of emotions. Her dad stroked her hair and off they went. Sahana looked out her window at the clouds, and smiled... here's to new beginnings.

*Landing at LAX*

Sahana and her family waited at the baggage belt for their luggage to finally come through. She caught sight of one of her baggages and ran for it. On her way she passed by a boy who seemed pretty close to her own age, screaming at his phone. His thick black hair quivered with anger and Sahana caught his blue green eyes flash in annoyance. She turned and continued her race to her bag, her heart racing from the running or the intensity of the boy's eyes, she wasn't sure.

"What took you so long?" asked her dad who had finally gathered the rest of the bags. Sahana huffed to a stop finally catching some breath before she replied.

"Sorry papa, I got distracted for a second by this angry looking guy who was in the way but hey at least we have everything now!" Finally with their bags at hand, the Ahuja family made their way to their new home.

They had bought a detached 5-bedroom house which was to die for. With huge bay windows, a balcony and the view of the ocean in the distance, it was everything Sahana had hoped for.

"Beta the room at the back belongs to your father and I, but you can have the pick of any of the other rooms, go relax before we go shopping," her mother said as she helped Sahana's father unload the bags from the car they had rented.

Sahana entered through the double front doors taking in the new house smell. She passed by the living room to get to the beautiful, spiral staircases that lead up to the bedrooms. The first room was slightly small and entirely unappealing to Sahana. The second one however, had great big windows peering towards the ocean. Now this was a view she wouldn't mind waking up to every morning. The closet was spacious and this room also happened to have a built in bathroom. It felt like her own little oasis and she couldn't wait to make it all hers.

The family started getting settled, buying new furniture, posters, making it their perfect home. The fifth bedroom that Sahana had originally thought was slightly small was turned into a temple, an essential seen in almost every indian family. A room to pray in, as Sahana purchased the new Shivji figure (AN: Shivji is one of the many gods worshipped in the Hindu culture).

Sahana's own room was transformed into a fandom fest as she coloured all the walls purple and papered one whole side with Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Game of Thrones posters. Another wall was dedicated to shelves filled with Sahana's favorite books and space added to make way for more books. The space by the third wall was taken up by her queen sized bed on which she was resting when she decided she wanted to take up a job till summer vacation ended. (AN: School usually ends in June I believe in India while in Canada school starts in Sept thus she has 2 months off). It was finally time for her to gain her independence and try to flourish unlike how she tried to in India.

She sent in her applications to a number of places, and got an interview at a golf and tennis club to be the ball girl. Although her parents didn't approve of her working, she convinced them to let her, as it would help build character. Besides, didn't they want her to adjust to life in America? What better way to get to know the people, the culture than mingling with them.

The first day at the job was a disaster. Apparently not only was she a ball girl, but being short staffed caused her to be towel girl at the pool and the waitress at the café outside the pool as well.

She was running after many aristocrats and businessmen as they got out of the pool, their drinks on her tray when suddenly she tripped over a loose leg and the drink flying out of her hand. She turned to the offender who now had some of the drink dribbling down his foot.

Sahana looked up and was frozen as her warm brown eyes met a pair of shocking blue green, angry ones peering at her from under a thick head of dark hair.
