I haven't laughed so hard in almost three years. I admit I was a bit nervous at first but the second Xzavier started cracking jokes with everyone the awkwardness went away. I was immediately brought into their friendship circle, I'll be the first to admit I'm really going to miss these weirdos when I have to leave again. Jessie and Xzavier shared the same group of friends, I wasn't all that surprised the two are pretty similar except for their sense of style and extracurricular activities at school. Xzavier did sports and quite surprisingly Jessie did the arts; music, drama, art, anything really. I could tell that these friends had been together for basically forever and I felt like I was intruding.
" So Alex, what brings you to this small town?" One of Xzavier's swim teammates, Jordan I think asks. All conversation halted as the question gained the interest of everyone at the table. I froze on the spot, what was I supposed to say to them?
"Well, I moved here to get away." Xzavier looked at me, his eyebrows knitting together to make a dark caterpillar, I almost laughed at the thought.
"Get away from what?" Addison one of the mutual friends asks me.
"Everything. I suffered a bad breakup and my ex wouldn't leave me alone. So I asked my parents if I could leave as I was planning on leaving for college anyway so whats a year if I promise to visit?" I hoped this would get them off my case sadly it didn't. It's close enough to the truth, right? I hate lying to people.
" Bad breakup? You have a boyfriend?" Xzavier was quick to fire those questions. I laughed at that, I don't think I'll ever have another relationship again.
"No. No boyfriend. I left because of him, I never want to see his face again." Well that's not the complete truth but not a complete lie. Technically, if you think about it, we are still together as he never let us breakup. I tried, on many different occasions, only to suffer extreme consequences. "Anyway what's there to do in this town?" That got Willow, a girl on the track team who is also on the student welcoming committee, to go off her brown curls bouncing with her excitement about the town. I breathed out a sigh of relief as no one brought up the topic again, thank God. After lunch there really wasn't any problems, minus the glaring I got from almost the entire female population at the school. Even though I haven't been to school in several months, it was actually fairly easy and passed by faster than I thought it would. The final bell rang and I started walking to the cafe.
"Alex!" The truck pulls up next to me, still moving as I didn't stop walking. I look expectantly at the open window. "Can I give you a ride home?"
"Well you could if I was going home." Xzavier chuckled. I don' t think I would've let him drive me back to the house anyway, then he'd know where I stayed and in my mind that's getting to close to someone.
"Okay. Where are you going then?" I sigh, still walking as he drives at the same pace.
"This little cafe near the beach, I got a job there." He looks thoughtful for a moment. I wonder if he's going to leave me alone.
" Is it called Oceanside View?" I raise an eyebrow at him.
"How'd you know?" He shrugs and smiles at me.
"Lucky guess. I'm heading there now actually, I go everyday after school. The ride offer is still open." I ponder that for a moment, its not like he's going to kill me hopefully.
"I guess. It beats walking." Xzavier stops the car and leans over his center council to open the passenger door. It wasn't a very long car ride and we spent it mostly in silence, but it wasn't awkward tense silence it was more neither of us had anything to say and I found that i liked this kind of silence. Xzavier parallel parked in front of the cafe on the old street. After the car is in park, Xzavier is opening the door for me before my brain could even think about doing it myself.
"Oh."surprised my brain goes stupid." thanks. And thank you for the ride Xzavier."
"Yeah. No problem." he smiles at me as he opens the cafe door for me." Anytime too." I smile softly back at him as I walk into the airconditioning.
"Oh good Alex you're here!" Kelly comes rushing up to the two of us. "There's so many people here for some reason!" she shoves something in my hands." Here put this on and be a doll and start on some of those tables." she points to the booths overlooking the sea." It would be a real help." I look in my hands and its one of those short aprons that just tie and sit on your hips, the ones with the pockets that most servers wear. Kelly turns to Xzavier.
"And you Xzavier James Madison, go start making some coffee." He grins at her.
"Yes ma'am." Kelly speed walks away to take another order and Xzavier and I share a look.
"Lucky guess right?" he rubs the back of his neck while looking sheepish.
"She was talking about a new waitress the other day and she's never hired anyone in this town before so I kinda guessed." I roll my eyes at him.
"Xzavier! I need more coffee pumpkin!" Kelly yells from the other side of the cafe. The blush was immediate on Xzavier's face, the poor kid looked mortified as he rushed off to start the coffee. I couldn't stop the giggle that escaped from my mouth at that. Walking to one of the tables Kelly had pointed out to me earlier I was still really amused.
"Hi. I'm Alex and I'll be serving you this afternoon, can I get you anything to drink?" It was an elderly couple who were holding hands across the table still looking so in love. A pain went through my chest as I realized I'd probably never get that but at least I knew it still existed.
A\N This is probably the longest you guys had had to wait for an update. Sorry summer came around and i got lazy and tore a ligament in my thumb. That as well as extreme writers block stopped the update. But over 1000 words!
