That afternoon, Nate and Lily worked together in the storage room, unpacking and storing the latest shipment of laptops and printers. With Emma currently on maternity leave, Lily had stepped in to fill the void in the receiving department.
"Can you get the two PCs from yesterday's delivery ready, please? Jay's asked us to upgrade the memory," Nate instructed Lily.
"Okay, I'll get the memory upgrades ready," Lily said, and then she walked over to the storage cupboard to retrieve the necessary components.
Nate headed down to the first floor, files in hand, using a different staircase. Alternatively, she could have taken the stairs at the back, which would have brought her out closer to the admin department's office.
"Oh, here you are."
As Nate ascended the stairs, she abruptly lifted her gaze. Her heart skipped a beat, racing with an excitement she couldn't control, as she caught sight of Keith approaching her.
"I've been searching everywhere for you," Keith said, making his way down the stairs towards Nate. "Devi told me you were in the storage room, so I was just about to track you down."
"What's going on?" Nate's anxiety was tempered by a spark of pleasure at knowing Keith had been searching for her.
"I've got a meeting with Mr Paul for the weekly update, and I've mentioned that you'll be coming along with me."
Nate's face went pale. "A meeting with Mr Paul?"
Nate's anxiety spiked as she contemplated meeting her boss for the first time. Until now, her only experience of Mr Paul had been the occasional glimpse of him through her office door or the sound of his voice carrying down the corridor. Devi had reassured her that despite his tough reputation, Mr Paul was actually quite charming in a social setting.
Nate followed Keith to Mr Paul's office on the third floor, feeling a mix of nerves and curiosity. However, the meeting proved to be less daunting than she had anticipated, and she remained relatively quiet throughout. Keith delivered a comprehensive report on the marketing and sales teams' progress over the past week, outlining their achievements and ongoing projects. Mr Paul also took the opportunity to check in with Nate, asking if she was encountering any challenges in her role.
"I would also like to request approval to facilitate a meeting between Matilda and the antivirus software company that has introduced the new product I briefed you on yesterday, sir," Keith said to Mr Paul. "Given that our marketing and sales teams will likely seek her input on the product, I think it is crucial for Matilda to have a comprehensive understanding of the product's features and benefits."
"By all means, go ahead. It's essential that you bring her up to speed on various aspects," Mr Paul said.
Nate's stomach twisted with a blend of anxiety and anticipation as she learned she'd be joining Keith on the outing. It wasn't the idea of spending time with Keith that sparked her enthusiasm, but rather the prospect of finally breaking free from the office routine. Harry had once emphasised the importance of procurement staff building strong relationships with suppliers. This trip would provide Nate with a valuable chance to connect with them in person.
"That's a great opportunity for you to build some relationships," Julian remarked when Nate shared the meeting details with him. "Who will you be meeting the supplier with?"
"Er... with the marketing and sales coordinator," Nate replied, deliberately withholding the detail that the coordinator in question was none other than the attractive man who had chivalrously accompanied her to the doctor's surgery previously.
"Be sure to take plenty of notes and absorb as much as you can. After all, you're stepping into the senior procurement role now, aren't you?"
Julian tenderly ruffled Nate's hair, and she nestled her head into the crook of his shoulder. They hadn't had a relaxing movie night together in ages, as Julian's laptop seemed to be an constant companion, even when he was supposed to be unwinding at home.
