Awsten was in the midst of grabbing some work files from his car when he noticed y/n still sitting in her driveway. It had been twenty minutes since he saw her pull in through the curtains, so being the slightly nosy neighbor he was, Awsten decided to check on her. The tint on her windows didn't allow him to see the tears streaming down her face, so he ignorantly knocked against the glass.

When he was met with her flushed cheeks and glossy eyes, his stomach dropped out of concern and embarrassment. He hadn't meant to intrude on her, but he partially wondered if she needed someone to reach out. They had been neighbors for a few years at that point, only being decent acquaintances but never strangers.

"I'm sorry, I just noticed you had been out here a while. Didn't know if you were locked out while your parents were gone or something," he sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "My mistake, I'll leave you be."

"No, you're fine," she laughed with her raw voice. "I hadn't realized how long I was sitting here." He wasn't sure why, but Awsten felt the need to comfort her throughout whatever was going on. Him and y/n knew each other well enough, with her parents occasionally having him over for dinner or her dropping off his mail when it got mixed up. They had interacted enough before that his concern wasn't too bold.

"Wanna come over and talk about it?" She thought for moment before agreeing, something that shocked both of them. They had never hung out or even been alone with each other, but she did trust Awsten. He was the ideal neighbor, always dropping off nice gifts for the holidays and making conversation when he could. There was no way for y/n to understand that part of the reason he put the extra effort into being nice was because he thought she was attractive. Just like he had no way of knowing her mind always wandered to fantasies of him.

Awsten wasn't only kind, but he was incredibly handsome. Having a successful man with a sharp jawline and toned arms just next door always made y/n nervous. She no longer just threw any old thing on when she was checking the mail or going for runs, all because she was wondering if he saw her. This interaction clued her in that he paid more attention than he let on.

He led her over to his home, which she had only been in a few times before. The first was a few years prior when he was moving in, seeing as her dog's excitement at the new person caught her off guard. Y/n remembers the anxiety that bubbled in her chest when the leash was ripped from her hand, only for her dog to dart through the neighbor's front door.

Awsten hadn't minded whatsoever, he actually found it to be the perfect welcoming gesture to the neighborhood. When y/n politely stepped in to grab her dog, she found a delightfully attractive guy happily playing with the pet. He had offered her a drink after introductions and then y/n excused herself, attempting to not overstay her welcome. But, of course, news of someone new on the street sparked her mom's interest and they became mild friends.

She took a seat on his sofa when he told her to, with Awsten heading to the kitchen to grab them drinks and a bowl of snack food. Even in her horrible mood, y/n liked that he had such impressive hospitality for his company. She looked around the living room for a moment, trying to avoid displaying her surprise at the fact that he could afford the home alone. He was young, only in his early 30s and owning something y/n couldn't imagine being able to buy. Both her parents had decent paying jobs to afford their home next door.

He had crisp grey walls and dark floors, decorated with expensive looking furniture. Everything seemed clean and pricy around her, even the shelves of books and random Knick-knacks. Despite his clear financial comfort, things around his home seemed minimalistic. It was as if everything was meticulously placed and nothing was there to simply fill up space. His modest decor contrasted with his mostly bold personality.
