Awsten didn't think anything of it as Y/N twisted about in her sleep. He didn't think anything of it as she whined and mumbled incoherent words. Nor did he think anything of it as she mumbled his name and reached around. Hell, he didn't even think anything of it as she grabbed onto him and snuggled into his body. He never thought anything of it.
Because why 'think something of it'? Why overthink the details of something that he enjoyed so much? Why harp on the relationship between him and his best friend? Overthinking only ever leads to issues, and Awsten didn't have the energy for any of that.
So, Awsten let Y/N get comfortable in his arms, adjusting however he saw fit and allowing her to sleep easily next to him. He would just keep a small smile on his face and hold his favorite person in the world close to his heart, where he thought she belonged. And with a trace of hope within his tired body, he tried to convince himself that she loved him as much as he loved her while he struggled to fall asleep. Awsten always did this, and without a second thought.
That night though, Y/N switched things up on him, in a way that left Awsten in a hard situation.
See, they always did this. At least once a month the two teenagers would make sure to clear a weekend for each other, as if they weren't spending every other weekend with one another. A weekend where they'd crash at one of the two's houses and do whatever their young hearts pleased. Typically, it consisted of movies, snacks, and terrible jokes (mostly from Awsten).
Neither of them could really remember a time they didn't do this. Awsten's parents and Y/N's parents had been long time friends, so when their kids ended up being the same age, it was natural for them to become close. Obviously the parents were shocked when they stayed close for so long, but they'd never complain. It was sweet to everyone, seeing a set of lifetime best friends stay that way for a good 17 years.
Most people compared the two to siblings, which rubbed Awsten the wrong way from a young age and continued to well into his teens. Awsten was slightly older than Y/N, a few months between the pair. Yet the few months were enough for Awsten to take on the protective role, something he would've done even if Y/N was older than him, but he didn't bother explaining that.
With his protective nature, Awsten was quickly seen as a big brother to Y/N, but that really wasn't the case for Awsten. He had a little sister, one he loved to death and did protect like he did Y/N, but fought with way more. Gracie was a sister to Awsten, but Y/N was not. Y/N agreed that her and Awsten were nothing like siblings too. She grew up with Gracie as well as Awsten and knew that the bonds were different, but she didn't seem nearly as bothered by the 'sibling' comparison as Awsten had been.
Awsten couldn't really explain why he hated the sibling thing at first. He just knew it wasn't accurate and made him extremely uncomfortable whenever it would be brought up. It wasn't until his teenage hormones started to take over that he truly understood why it made him feel so queasy. No one wants to hear the girl they want to fuck compared to their sister.
Which leads back to Awsten's 'hard situation'. With Awsten's obvious attraction to Y/N, he had no clue what to do when Y/N greeted him at her front door in a big T-shirt and nothing but underwear underneath (something he found out when she reached for something and the fact that the T-shirt was not quite long enough was displayed). To make matters worse, she brightly smiled and told him that her parents would be out all weekend. It was a fact that would make him ecstatic as her boyfriend, maybe, but as a guy hopelessly in love with her deep down it filled him with anxiety. He still mustered up a smile at the gorgeous girl and begged his dick to calm down.
