"Movie night?" Awsten leaned against Y/N's doorframe, holding a bag of her favorite snack up. She looked up from her laptop, deciding her homework could wait, and closed it.
"I'm down," she shrugged, tucking her notes away and plugging her laptop into it's charger. "Who else is here?"
"No one? Remember, my mom and your dad drove up to see my grandparents earlier today," he reminded her. She truly hadn't realized the house was completely empty other than them. Usually Awsten at least had one of his college friends over or a girl he was casually speaking to. "Swear, you get so caught up in studying you don't even notice the world around you."
"I know," she sighed, standing up and wincing as her bones creaked and cracked. She had sat down for far too long. "But you don't have any friends over?"
"Nah, I just wanted to chill tonight. Empty house, stormy night... seemed relaxing."
"I don't want to impose on your relaxation," Y/N teased with a stupid smirk. Awsten rolled his eyes at his (nearly) step-sister's remark but smiled anyway.
"Shut up and meet me in my room, put something comfy on." With that, he pulled her door shut behind him and made his way down the hall. Y/N appreciated how often he included her in things, how much time he liked to spend with her, how he was always thinking of her.
Though, as she dressed, she also thought about how hard his kindness made things. She assumed it was innocent, trying to relate and connect with the teenage girl he'd be living with until he moved out. Yet, she couldn't help but feel her skin grow hot and her chest run cold when he'd smile at her, or get a little extra cuddly.
Awsten could easily cross those lines without anyone feeling uncomfortable. Which really surprised Y/N, considering she refused to be alone with any men whatsoever until Awsten was in her life. Her dad excluded, she always felt uncomfortable and annoyed around guys. Even certain family members rubbed her the wrong way, yet Awsten was so gentle and simply kind that he made their bond work.
Y/N was actually quite disappointed they had met the way they did. Though their parents weren't actually married, and had only discussed engagement, Awsten's friends still referred to Y/N as his step-sister. Luckily, Y/N had never mentioned anything about Awsten to the few people at school she associated with, and whenever someone would ask who the 'weirdly hot guy with purple hair' was who was picking her up, she'd brush it off as a family friend.
She couldn't help but wonder if her and Awsten had met on their own, would they have hit it off? Would they wind up dating? At least friends?
Still, Y/N knew better than to focus on those thoughts right before she was set to spend time with Awsten, so she brushed them off and made her way to his room. She walked into his room after seeing the door wide open, finding Awsten flipping through the Netflix Home Screen to pass time.
She liked spending time in his room. Besides the fact that it was his, Y/N found it really comfortable. His walls were a nice shade of blue and his curtains were good enough quality to make it always feel like nighttime. He had the head of his bed frame pressed against the wall with the three sides open to climb into, with a little bunk area above the bed.
See it wasn't exactly bunk beds, something Awsten was adamant about whenever Geoff would tease him about it. But he was right, considering the beds weren't connected and this one was perpendicular to his own. It was merely loft-like structure that someone could climb up that he decided to tuck his bed under.
