Chapter 2
"You are not going to believe it." Nurse Pia's voice beamed in excitement.
Nurse Pia works as a full-time employee at the boarding school. She was assigned to respond to emergencies and deliver treatment to victims by providing first aid. Even though she was a married woman in her early thirties, she appeared much younger. Any passersby might have mistaken her for another intern or a part-time college student.
"Try me," Ahana murmured, her brow furrowed, her gaze fixed on the biometrics as she pushed her thumb, somewhat more firmly than necessary, to make an impression. She turned to face Nurse Pia, who was staring at her with wide eyes after she heard a beep sound.
When she heard Ahana's response, her face sagged somewhat. "Way to ruin it. You couldn't just say 'what' and maybe gasp a bit."
Ahana tried hard to conceal a chuckle as she attempted to act accordingly but was unsuccessful. She decided it wasn't worth the effort and asked, with no hint of amusement in her voice. "What could be so exciting?"
"Rumours have it that a handsome guy has been admitted to our boarding school." Her voice was filled with giddiness and excitement.
"And here I thought it was only for kids."
"Don't take that tone with me. I saw his name and picture on the registration form. He even looks handsome in a passport size photograph. Imagine what he might look like in real. Oh, and he's been assigned to our wing! Can you believe it?"
The school was separated into two primary buildings, namely wings, with staff distributed evenly between the two. Ahana ended up working in Wing B. Maybe they separate names using surname, or so she assumed.
"What I can't believe is despite being married to a great guy, you're still ogling at this new person," she exclaimed, pointing her finger toward Pia.
"I'm not ogling..." Nurse Pia quickly brought her hands up to cover her mouth. "Am I?"
Ahana shook her head, adjusting her spectacles to her nose, and threw her a small smile. "You are good."
Pia pouted slightly. "You are mean."
She waved to the nurse and headed towards her class. A feeling of excitement was bubbling inside her. The corridor was filled with children running around hanging name tags around their necks, along with a few parents who were bidding goodbye with tearful eyes.
We only keep them for a few hours. Ahana felt the urge to cry out loud.
She knew it was just a one-day show, and they were only creating a scene. She couldn't help but sigh. The children, however, looked thrilled. They were more than interested in meeting their groupies. That made her smile inwardly. She was all prepared to line them up when she felt someone tugging the side of her pants.
"Mo-mma"
The tiny girl jutted her chin and looked up with large eyes. After hearing her, Ahana quietly smiled and dropped her gaze to tell the small girl that she wasn't her 'momma' when her eyes were drawn entirely to her. She got down on her knees and gripped both her arms, her smile gone almost instantaneously.
Her gaze was drawn to the ID card attached to her shirt. A three-year-old girl in a wheelchair stared at her with large doe eyes, flailing her arms in the air in an attempt to reach her. Her eyes moistened up as she remembered her name again.
Gia. Just Gia?
Anger boiled up within her as she contemplated the child's oblivious parents, who had chosen to send her away to a day boarding school instead of providing the medical assistance she so desperately needed. But then another idea occurred to her—perhaps the mother was working? All these suppositions fled from her mind when the little one beamed at her with tenderness.
