Ever More

“ Jack you coming”, Miley asked. “ Yeah”, I said getting up.

“ Jack you have to drive I broke my toe”, Celia complained. “ Get a bandaid”, I said heading into my room brushing my hair as I went.

“ Jackie Van broke up with me”, Izzy said upset. “ What happened”, I asked changing into my school uniform. “ He just stopped caring”, she said. “ In that case he’s an idiot and not worth your time now get ready for school”, I said grabbing my homework. “ Jack I’m missing my phone”, Celia complained. “ Try the cereal cabinet”, I said putting my headphones in. I headed downstairs and changed my shoes then went into the kitchen. I grabbed a granola bar and started to eat it while I made myself a sandwich. I felt my phone vibrated in my pocket. “ Hello”, I said answering it. “ Jack are you coming or not we’re waiting”, my best friend Sandra asked. “ Coming”, I said grabbing my jacket and turning off my phone. “ See you at school losers drive yourselves”, I called then ran out the door.

“ Hey Jackie”, Kelley said opening the door. “ Hey crazy girl”, I said sliding in. “ How are your doppelgangers”, Reese asked. “ Same old, same old”, I shrugged. Celia, Miley, Izzy and I were quadruplets I know weird. Want to hear something even weirder my parents named me Jack. As a result I became a tomboy while the others went about being girly girls. We all had long honey blonde hair and dark blue eyes. We had to style our hair so we looked different. I always had my naturally straight hair up in a ponytail. Izzy crimpled hers, Miley curled hers and Celia always wore hers in pigtails. My parents left us when we were ten and never came back so it was just the four of us. I was the only one with a job so I had to pay rent and bills. I was a tomboy like I said and it was winter so I was wearing a plain cream knit turtleneck and some black jeans. Anyways I talked to my friends all the way to school talking about comic books and anime. Reese, Sandra and Kelley were my three best friends we were closer than sisters. “ I heard there was a few new students coming in today”, Kelley said as we stopped in front of the school. Great just what we needed in our packed school more bodies.

We went up to the computer lab and watched ASDF movies until the bell rang. The scary thing about school was the fact that I shared all the same classes as my sisters. I went into foods and sat in my usual seat and the other girls came in gradually. I had to work with my sisters because the teacher thought it was a great way to grow together. I thought it was bullshit but I kept my mouth shut. We started to make our buttermilk biscuits or I did they mostly went and talked with their boyfriends. We were making a complete meal today, biscuits, eggs, bacon and pancakes. I finished earlier and started eating savouring every mouthful. “ Excellent work Jack”, Mr. Yuen said impressed. “ Thanks sir you can have some if you want Celia’s on a diet”, I suggested. “ Thank you”, he said, “ you get an A of course”. “ Of course”, I said with a smile. “ So did you hear about the new boys”, he asked. “ Yeah but I didn’t know they were boys”, I said honestly. “ Like we need more kids huh”’, he said nudging me. Mr. Yuen was my favourite teacher he understood me when I talked and I appreciated that.

When the bell rang I was cleaned up and headed to second period. I sat with Kelley for this class. We played X’s and O’s while the teacher talked. I looked over my sisters they were all dressed up as per usual. Celia was wearing a short red chiffon dress with a black sequins cover, Izzy was wearing a short long sleeved royal blue dress and Miley was wearing a short long sleeved white lace dress. They all looked rich and why because I worked three jobs to keep up with their constant need for better clothes. I worked at a restaurant, the garage and Wal-Mart. I actually liked working at the garage the most I loved cars. I was one of the only girls working there but the guys respected me and didn’t try anything. “ Class we have some new students”, the teacher announced twenty minutes into class. “ They must be slow”, Kelley said calmly. “ Maybe just dim”, I whispered. She snorted then burst out laughing violently going into a laugh attack. I bit my lip to keep from laughing myself I had to keep a straight face right now.

“ This is Garrett”, he said as the guys walked in, “ Thor, Randy, Stefan and Jared”. “ Welcome”, the class chorused. The guys nodded then went over to some empty seats by my sisters, poor souls. “ Hi I’m Celia”, Celia said batting her eyelashes. “ Thor”, the first guy said. “ Randy”, the second said. “ Garrett”, the third said. “ Stefan”, the fourth said. “ I’m Izzy”, she said.

“ Miley Norton”, Miley said sweetly. “ Jared Carlton”, the last guy finally said. “ Its nice to meet you guys”, Celia said still batting her lashes.

“ So are you guys like triplets or something”, Thor asked.

“ Something like that”, Miley smiled. “ Ouch”, Kelley said. “ Whatever hey the teacher’s not watching wanna make a dash for the mall there’s a book signing”, I said tapping my pencil against the desk. “ Deal we just need Sandra, Reese, Hanson and Eddie”, she agreed. Hanson and Eddie were two of our other friends they were just as awesome as us. We planned it all on a scrap piece of paper then put it into action. When Mr. Maison went for coffee we snuck out and went to the others’ classes. I took Mrs. B’s class and I just said that we needed them for an emergency locker situation. I turned around and started to walk away knowing they would follow. “ Hey Norton who’s who?”, a familiar voice said. “ Dan”, I said turning back around. “ Hey wild child”, he smiled. “ You’re back”, I said hugging him.

“ Nice to see you too Jack”, he said hugging me back. “ Don’t tell me that boy in my class is your twin brother”, I said raising my finger. “ Yep that’s Jared why?”, he sighed. “ He looks so grownup and who’s his posse”, I said peeking back into my class. “ Friends from his last school”, he explained.

“ Those are some pretty damn good friends”, Sandra said as we walked away. Dan was my best friend and my confidant before he moved to California and now he was back. I remembered Jared now he used to ignore us he was naturally a popular great at all the sports. They’d moved when I was nine and I’d talked with Dan for a few months then we lost touch.

“ So how’s the dumb blonde patrol”, Dan asked as we walked across the parking lot. “ Same as before just talker and a little more blonde”, I shrugged. “ You haven’t changed a bit”, he said as we started to climb down the hill. “ Maybe a bit”, I said stopping myself from falling by grabbing a tree. “ Still a klutz”, he teased. “ You’re not exactly a ballerina yourself snobby”, I said running the rest of the way down. I landed on my feet and bowed proudly for my fans. The others reached the bottom and we headed for the mall. “ I never thought I’d see you going to the mall”, Dan said.

“ She goes every day but yeah this is the first time she’s gone on her own without the blondes”, Reese said. “ So has anything new happened”, Dan asked. “ I got on the soccer team”, Eddie said proudly. “ Everyone that signed up did”, Hanson reminded him. “ Good job guys what about you blondie”, he asked then saw that I stopped. “ My parents ditched”, I said picking up the pace. “ Ouch so does that mean the blondes are working now”, he asked. “ Nope just me”, I said as we walked across the mall’s parking lot. “ Sorry about your parents Jack but think of good things”, he said nudging me. “ Like what”, I questioned. “ Me being back”, he said cheerfully.

I laughed and shook my head. We went inside bought copies of the Darkest Powers and got them signed. I loved this book I was glad I finally had a reason to buy it. I barely ever bought myself gifts so this was special. Once we were done we bought bubble tea and went walking around Seattle for the rest of the day. We walked mostly through downtown occasionally grabbing one or two things. I was glad I had Dan back now the pack was complete!
