Miles POV
My heart was racing so fucking fast that I was sure it would jump out of my chest.
“Where is she?” I asked my brother, gritting my teeth.
“I don’t know.” Max mumbled, looking through the crowd. “I don’t see her.”
We came to the school earlier to talk to Maddie. We were going to take her home with us. She didn’t fucking belong with her fake family. We were her family. She belonged with Max and me.
But we couldn’t find her. We couldn’t fucking find her.
Where the fuck was she?
A disturbing thought came to me.
What if her fake parents took her away? What if she moved away? What if I never saw her again?
I clenched my fists and tightened my jaw. My vision blackened.
“What are the two of you doing here?” I heard Zack’s voice behind us. “The class is starting in two minutes.”
“Did you see Madeline?” Max asked him as he turned around.
“Why, so you can bully her?” Zack sighed.
The rage exploded inside of me.
I turned around, wanting to punch the living shit out of Zack, but Max stopped me.
“No.” he said calmly. “We need to talk to her.”
Zack raised an eyebrow at us. “What is going on?”
“We would never bully our sister.” Max told him.
Zack’s eyes widened to the point where I thought they would fall out. His mouth opened as he stared at us for a few seconds.
“I told you!” he shouted. “I fucking told you!”
“Stop screaming.” Max told him, looking back at the crowd. “Help us find her.”
Zack looked at the students around us. His eyes were roaming over them, searching for Maddie.
“If she is the same age as you, it means that she is your triplet, right?” Zack mumbled.
“Yes.” I answered, clenching my fists.
Where was she?!
“Maybe she is already in class.” Max mumbled. “Maybe she came earlier or we missed her.”
I wouldn’t miss her. I would see her. I would fucking see my sister.
But maybe she did come in even earlier than we did.
“Why didn’t she grow up with you?” Zack asked as we started walking toward the classroom.
“Now is not the time, Zack.” Max mumbled, looking around.
We entered the classroom, and my eyes immediately went to her desk.
It was empty.
It was fucking empty!
Where was she?!
My heart raced, and my stomach twisted painfully.
Did they take her away? Was she gone?
Oh, God.
Max grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the classroom.
I didn’t even notice where he was taking me.
My heart was racing, and my mind was only on her. Where was she? What if I never saw her again? What if they took her from me again?
“I need Madeline Reed’s address.” I heard Max’s voice, and I looked around.
We were in the administration office.
“Mr. Adams, I can’t give you her address.” the lady said, making Max clench his fists.
“I don’t give a shit about what you can and can’t do.” Max said, walking closer to her desk. “I need Madeline Reed’s address right the fuck now.”
The woman gulped and glanced at me.
“Mr. Adams, I...” she spoke, but I interrupted her.
“Madeline Reed’s address.” I said, narrowing my eyes at her. “Now.”
The woman gulped and started rummaging through the papers.
I guess we were even scarier than we thought.
I saw her write something down on a small piece of paper.
“You can’t tell anyone that I gave you this.” she said, her voice trembling. “I could lose my job.”
“Don’t worry.” Max said as he grabbed the paper from her hand and rushed out of the office.
I followed behind him.
We were out of the school in a few seconds.
I unlocked our car and practically jumped behind the wheel.
Max showed me the paper, and I drove toward her house.
My heart was going to jump out of my chest.
I needed to see her.
Right the fuck now.
I didn’t even know how much time had passed since we left school. I didn’t even know how long it would take me to get to her house.
I knew when we were there because I heard my brother gasp.
“What the fuck?!” he shouted, making me hit the brakes so fucking hard that we both almost flew out of the car.
I looked around, and my heart stopped.
There was nothing in the place where her house was supposed to be. Fucking nothing!
I could see the remains of the house that used to be here, but that was it. There was no house here. There was nothing but some fucking bricks, trees, and bushes.
Fear gripped my insides, and I almost threw up.
Where was she?!
“Did you read the address correctly?” I asked my brother, keeping my eyes on the stacked up bricks that used to be a wall.
“Yes.” Max mumbled, his voice trembling.
“Did the bitch give us a fake address?!” I shouted, slamming my palm on the steering wheel.
“Go back.” Max said, gritting his teeth. “I am going to fucking kill her!”
I turned the car around and drove back to the school as fast as I fucking could.
Where was she?!
Max flew out of the car as soon as I slowed down.
“Jesus, Max!” I shouted, stopping fully and turning the engine off.
He didn’t even hear me. He was already running toward the entrance.
I cursed, got out of the car, and rushed after my brother.
“You gave us a fake address!” Max shouted as soon as he barged inside the administration office.
The woman looked up. I could tell that she was afraid.
“I didn’t, Mr. Adams.” she said as she grabbed a file and handed it to Max. “I promise.”
Max grabbed the file and opened it.
The woman was telling the truth.
I froze. Why would Maddie lie about her address? Where was she?!
Max gave the file back to the woman and stormed out of the office.
“Where is she, Max?” I asked as I followed behind him.
“I don’t know.” Max mumbled. “But we are going to find her.”
We would. We would find her and we would bring her home.
