Miles POV
My legs were shaking as I was walking toward Maddie’s room. The only thing that was stopping me from falling was Max holding my hand tightly.
"You will need to be careful." Sam repeated. "Don’t touch her too much. There are a lot of wires around her."
That wasn’t fucking happening. I wasn’t going to leave her side once I got inside that room. I was going to kiss her and hold her hand. I needed her to know that I was there. I needed her to hear me and feel me so she could come back to me.
"How did the surgery go?" Max asked.
Sam sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He tightened his jaw and gulped.
"It was hard, and for a moment there, I thought that we were going to lose her." Sam said, his voice laced with pain. "If we arrived at the OR only a few minutes after…"
He stopped talking, and a small sob escaped him.
My body went cold. Max cursed loudly.
I started walking faster. I needed to get to her. I needed to make sure that she was breathing. I pulled Max with me.
I reached the end of the hallway, and I turned around to look at Sam.
"Left." he said.
I turned to my left and rushed through the hallway.
"Slow down, Milo." Sam said. "You missed the room."
I turned around abruptly and saw him standing in front of the door a few feet away. Max pulled me toward Sam, who hugged us both.
"I love you guys." he mumbled.
"We love you too." Max said.
I kept my eyes on the door. I needed him to open it.
Sam grabbed the doorknob and opened the door.
I gasped. Max sobbed.
"Maddie!" I exclaimed as I let Max’s hand go and rushed to her.
She was so fucking pale. She looked like she lost weight while she was in surgery. She was hooked up to a bunch of different machines.
I finally reached her and cupped her cheeks.
She was so fucking cold.
"Why is she so cold, Sam?" Max cried out.
He was kissing her forehead repeatedly. I couldn't look away from her face. I wanted her to wake up.
"She will warm up." Sam mumbled.
"I love you, Maddie." I said as I felt tears fall on my cheeks. "Please come back to me. Please, Maddie."
Max was running his fingers through her hair. He hadn’t stopped crying.
"I am here, Mads." he mumbled. "I won’t leave you, okay? I will be here when you wake up."
I wanted her to wake up now. How the fuck was I supposed to survive for a whole week until they got her out of this fucking coma?
"Can you wake her up sooner?" I asked, looking up at Sam. "Please, wake her up sooner."
Sam tightened his jaw.
"We can’t, Milo." he said quietly. "She needs this to survive."
I sobbed and looked back at her.
"Don’t die, Maddie." I cried out. "You can’t die. You can’t leave me. Please, please don’t leave me."
I buried my head in her neck. My whole body was shaking.
"She is not dying." Max mumbled. "You are not dying, Maddie."
I felt his hand on the back of my neck. He squeezed it gently. I really wanted it to be her hand.
I’ve never felt pain like this before. I’ve never felt sadness like this before. I wanted her to wake up. I wanted her to be okay. She had to be okay.
"I will be right back, guys." Sam said softly.
I heard him walk away. I heard the door close.
I lifted my head and looked up at my brother. He was staring down at our sister. He was caressing her cheek softly. His eyes were filled with tears.
"Max?" I called him.
He looked up at me and gulped.
"What are we going to do if…" I asked, my voice breaking.
"No." Max said sternly. "We are not talking about it. It is not happening. It is not fucking happening, Milo. She will wake up. She will be okay."
I looked down at her. I tightened my jaw. I really wanted to kill the fucker who did this to her.
"Do you think that she can hear us?" I asked.
"I don’t know." Max mumbled. "But if she can, she needs to hear us talk about her being okay. She needs to hear how much we love her. She needs to hear how fucking much we miss her."
She really needed to hear that.
"Did you hear that, love?" I asked as I leaned in and kissed her cheek. "We love you and we miss you, so you have to come back to us. You have to come back, Maddie."
"She will." Max said as he ran his fingers through her hair. "She will wake up, and we will take her home. We will eat pasta with pesto every damn day until she is sick of it. We will go to the beach. We will go back to school. We will tell everyone that she is our sister. We will take her shopping. We will watch every movie and every show she wants to watch. We will do everything she wants to do, and we will have an amazing time. We will finally be together, and we will finally be happy."
"We will hug you, and we will never let you go, love." I added. "We will be together just like we were always supposed to be. Nothing and no one will break us apart again."
I just had to survive a week. Only a week and she would wake up. Only a week and I would see her smile again.
The door opened, and I looked up. Sam and Ryan came back. Ryan sobbed quietly.
"Oh, Addie." Ryan said as he approached the bed.
I moved a little so he could kiss her cheek.
"Hey, my baby." Ryan mumbled. "You will be okay. Everything will be okay."
Ryan was breathing heavily. I could tell that he was holding back tears.
"Were any of her organs damaged?" Ryan asked, looking up at Sam.
"We had to take out her spleen." Sam mumbled, making me look at him.
"What does that mean?" Max asked, his voice shaking.
"If she gets an infection, it could get complicated." Sam mumbled. "We will need to be more careful if she gets sick."
I gritted my teeth and looked back down at her. That fucker made her life more difficult. I really wanted to kill him.
"She will be okay." Max mumbled. "We will take good care of her. We will make sure that she is healthy and safe."
"We will." Ryan said as he took her small hand in his. "Everything will be okay once she wakes up."
Yes, it would. I had to wait a week. Only a week and she would wake up.
