y/n l/n of downtown new york was proud to say that she was quite a heavy sleeper.

confident enough that if a wild fire had randomly started in the middle of her bedroom, most likely she would be able to sleep through it somehow and wake up the next morning in the afterlife.

so to say she was surprised when she found herself waking up at 3 in the morning to the muffled sound of faint knocking would be a complete understatement.

it wasn't even the usual knocking she was used to hearing, the one that usually bounced from the oak door of her bedroom. instead, the sound seemed to be coming from her shuttered window.

choosing to ignore it, she buried her head into her pillow with an indignant huff, silently hoping ─ praying ─ that wherever it was coming from, it would die down in minutes time. but as the seconds stretched on, the strange sound only seemed to grow louder.

with a frustrated grunt, she pushed herself off of her mattress and cursed out loud. then, half-awake, crossed the room for the window.

the second she threw her curtains open, her foul mood only spiraled down further at the sight of her next door neighbor, shu yamino, crouched outside with his signature lopsided smile.

to say that she was less than happy to see him this early in the morning would be the second biggest understatement of the night, but given the fact that the boy who lived next door was currently perched on her windowsill under the moonlight, clad in an oversized mario graphic shirt and a pair of gray sweatpants, it was considerably difficult to maintain the same level of anger she had just moments ago.

"rise and shine," he greeted, his hand gripping on to the window frame to balance himself while his free hand ran through his obvious bedhead as an attempt to keep his hair in place; it didn't do much. it continued to stick up in a funny set of directions.

"what could you possibly want this early in the morning?" she groaned. despite saying this though, she took a step back to give shu enough space to hop inside.

as far as anyone was concerned, y/n l/n and shu yamino's friendship had been set in stone the second the yamino family had parked their suzuki minivan in the small garage next door. shu's family had moved into the neighborhood when he was six, and the two had been inseparable ever since. birthdays, christmases, graduations ─ they were there for each other's important days, and they were there for the less than stellar ones too.

even though they rarely ever fought, last night just so happened to fall under the "less than stellar" category.

stepping inside and straightening himself to his full height, shu awkwardly shoved his hands into his pockets. he looked around, a small smile pulling at his lips when his eyes landed on the familiar counterfeit figurines displayed on her dresser. "i wanted to apologize," he started. "for what happened earlier."
