by the time y/n got home from her last class, it was nearly 6:30 in the evening. thankfully, she reached her apartment complex in one piece, letting out a relieved breath at the warmth welcoming her as she padded through the heated lobby.

it was halfway through december already and the weather didn't look like it was going to let up any time soon. the below-zero degree weather, the snow-clumped streets, the need to always stay indoors ㅡ she thanked her lucky stars everyday that she managed to get a decent spaced apartment just a couple of blocks away from campus.

she moved out of her dorm two weeks ago and was almost done with unpacking everything, and luca  was nice enough to help her get settled in and had offered to bring the rest of her stuff over by next week.

presently, she nodded at the receptionist in greeting, who gave her a small wave of recognition before typing something on her keyboard.

a few feet away, the elevator doors were already closing when a loud voice echoed through the lobby.

"vox!"

startled, she turned her head to see the receptionist holding out a folder over her desk, glaring at the person inside the elevator, who now rested a hand on the metal doors to stop them from closing in at the last minute. y/n was standing far away enough to the side that she couldn't see the person's face.

"someone dropped this off for you earlier," the receptionist called out.

"i'll pick it up later," a low voice ㅡ vox's, y/n assumed ㅡ from inside the elevator replied. "just let me drop my bag off first."

when she finally reached the doors, she pulled her feet to a stop, expecting it to close already. but instead, she was met with a gangly boy who towered the empty metal lift, a long finger pressing on to the button manning the doors, while he leaned back against the metal ramp behind him.

he tilted his head a bit and looked at her, arching an inquisitive brow. "are you getting in or not?"

shaking off her brief reverie, she nodded and hastily stepped inside. "thanks."

the ends of his lips briefly twitched upward as she turned on her heels to face the front of the elevator. he pushed on another button and the doors slammed shut after her.

the metal beneath them shook violently as the elevator hauled upwards, the lights flickering in an unusual pattern.

she looked up through the fingers she was fiddling with, only to have the boy glance back at her at that exact second. she quickly turned away and, by the way he was shifting on his feet, he did too.

just then, the elevator lurched into a sudden stop, making her almost topple forward had she not gripped on to the side ramps on time.

she stole a glimpse at the small panel of buttons, but it didn't display what floor they were in.
