October 22nd
Emma opened her eyes. Why did it feel so late? She turned to look at the alarm clock and gasped when she saw that it was 10:15. That couldn't be right. Her boy's should be up by now.
Emma stood up and walked over to Parker's crib, only to find that it was empty. She was just about to panic when she heard giggles coming from the other room.
Emma followed the laughs and found herself in the kitchen. David was standing by the counter with Parker on his hip. Sitting on the counter was Oliver and Leo. All four of them were licking chocolate frosting off of spoons.
Mary Margaret walked over, hands on her hips. "Are you boys frosting the cake or eating?"
David pulled the spoon out of his mouth. "Both."
Mary Margaret grabbed a dish towel and smacked him on the arm playfully. "Honestly David, you're just like an overgrown child. I mean, just look at Parker. He is COVERED in frosting."
David shrugged. "What can I say? The kid likes chocolate."
"It's in his hair, David!"
"You should try some Grandma. It's really good." Oliver grinned.
"Yeah, Grandma." David smirked.
Mary Margaret rolled her eyes, but she had as small smile on her face. "Is there any frosting left?"
"Of course there is." David said. "Who do you think I am?" He reached to the side for the frosting and paled. "On second thought, I think we're out."
"David! That was two things of frosting. You let the kids eat two things of frosting? Are you trying to make them sick?"
"Relax. They didn't eat both containers. I had some too. Plus we used some on the cake."
Mary Margaret snorted. "The cake is only half frosted, David. You can clean up the boys. I am going to get more frosting. I want everything to be perfect. It's a special day, David."
"What day is it?" Emma asked. Everyone spun around to face her.
"Emma! You're awake early!"
"Early? Mom, it's after 10:00. I slept in. The funny thing is, I remember setting the alarm."
"Right, that." Mary Margaret said. "I turned it off."
"Why?"
"Because you needed the rest, Emma. Especially today. Plus it gave us time to get everything ready. Well, it would be ready if your father hadn't eaten half the frosting."
Emma frowned. "What do you mean especially today? What is so special about today?"
Leo's mouth dropped open. David and Mary Margaret looked a mix between surprised and sad.
"You're joking." David muttered. "Tell me you're joking."
"She isn't laughing, dad." Leo pointed out.
"You really don't know what day it is?" Mary Margaret asked sadly.
"Emma. It's your birthday." David said.
Emma laughed. "I'm pretty sure it's not my birthday."
"I'm pretty sure it is." Mary Margaret said. "I was there."
"My birthday is on the 22nd, it's the...it's the 22nd?" Her eyes widened.
"Good. You didn't actually forget your birthday. You just forgot the day." Mary Margaret sighed in relief. "Yes Emma, it's the 22nd." She smiled. "Happy Birthday!" Mary Margaret rushed forward and wrapped her daughter in a hug.
