Their decision to join us was a morale boost. Murphy's resourcefulness and Emori's knowledge of the area could be invaluable assets. It also spoke to the unexpected alliances and friendships that had formed in our fight for survival. My mother's promise to Murphy and Emori was the best she could offer under the circumstances. The harsh reality was that no one could guarantee their safety or a spot in the lottery. I had grown to like Emori and respected her resilience and resourcefulness. In my eyes, she was as much a part of Skaikru as any of us, but I knew that convincing the rest of the Ark survivors might not be so straightforward. Their acceptance of her, given the complex dynamics and prejudices within our community, was far from certain.

As these thoughts swirled in my mind, my mother drew me into another embrace, her hug filled with a mix of love, fear, and hope. She kissed my forehead – a gesture that brought both comfort and a poignant reminder of what was at stake. I watched her walk towards the door, offering her a reassuring smile, which she returned with a faint, brave one of her own. The finality of that moment, as she closed the door behind her, left a silent echo in the air. Everyone was now fully suited up, the anticipation of the mission palpable among us. It was time to embark on our journey. I took the lead, familiar with the path from the Flame Keeper's tower. "This way," I said, my voice steady despite the flutter of nerves in my stomach.

As we made our way through the winding corridors, the reality of our mission set in. We were venturing out into a dangerously irradiated world, racing against time to save Raven and return before the death wave hit. The stakes were incredibly high, and the margin for error was slim. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, there was a sense of unity and determination among us. Murphy, Emori, Bellamy, and I – each brought our own strengths to the mission, forming an unlikely but capable team. The path ahead was fraught with danger, but our resolve was firm. We were determined to face whatever challenges lay ahead, united by a common goal and driven by the bonds we had forged in the crucible of survival.

The interior of the supply truck was cramped and uncomfortable, but the physical discomfort paled in comparison to the emotional turmoil swirling within me. As the landscape rolled by, my thoughts were incessantly drawn to Raven, her safety paramount in my mind.

Bellamy's question, cutting through the hum of the truck, seemed to pierce the tense silence. "Why did you come on this mission, Kegan?" His voice held a blend of curiosity and something deeper, perhaps a hint of resentment.

Without hesitation, I responded, "Raven's my family. I've known her longer than any of the other survivors." My voice was firm, underlining the depth of my commitment to her.

Bellamy's subsequent challenge felt like a veiled provocation. "Yesterday, you were okay with leaving your family out there – my sister, Kane..." His words, laden with accusation, hung heavily between us.

I felt a flare of defensiveness. "I wasn't okay with it, Bellamy. You know that," I countered, my frustration evident. "The thought of leaving Raven behind has been tearing me apart. We should have gone back for her way sooner."

I took a moment to collect my thoughts before continuing, "Bellamy, I never meant to hurt you." The admission was difficult but necessary.

His retort was quick, laced with bitterness. "Aiming a gun at me is a strange way to show it." There was truth in his words, and I couldn't deny the complexity of that moment.

I sighed, acknowledging the gravity of what had transpired. "I didn't pull the trigger," I said softly, hoping he understood the internal conflict that had gripped me then.

"Does that make it okay?" Bellamy pressed, his eyes searching mine for an answer.

I shook my head, the harsh truth spilling out. "Nothing about this is okay. Every choice I make seems to lead to more pain, more loss."
