Pain seared through his chest like fire and pure agony burned his lungs. He had been stabbed. No shot; that was it. He had heard the gun blasts. Felt the icy burn as it coursed through him like black poison and the bullet came to rest right where his hearts had been, before they were shattered like glass.

The wound was tearing him apart. He could feel it. It was an excruciating void in his chest, deep inside. He wanted to run and do something but he just couldn't. Looked down, he gasped for breath but there was no blood on him. Not one drop.

In front of him he saw her. She was there. He couldn't miss her; laying on the hard pavement. He'd watched her as smashed to the ground like a China doll; fragile and beautiful. Cracked and broken.

The Doctor couldn't breathe. He couldn't think, he couldn't feel anything. He was numb apart from the raw pain but he wanted to feel it. He wouldn't be feeling much else for a while.

"Rose?" He whispered, standing there as if his body was frozen.

"Rose... Rose, ROSE!" He screamed it this time. A scream wrought with anger and fury. He ran to her and threw himself onto his knees beside her, the fire still burning fiercely in his rib cage. He took out his sonic screwdriver but the whirring sound echoed in his ears, taunting him with its uselessness. Screaming, he threw it and heard it crack a few metres away.

"Talk. Talk to me Rose, I'm here... I'm right he-" his voice broke as he muttered and he gasped for breath once again. He clutched her frail body and looked into her face. She was pale. Deathly pale, but not yet dead. Her eyes were glazing over and her trembling lips were parted. Hot blood had run down her face and mingled with The Doctor's tears.

"I'm sorry," she whispered to him. He held her tighter in his arms and felt the blood from the bullet wounds soak into his pinstripe suit. She'd always loved this suit the best...

"No, no, don't you do that to me! You hear me? You're going nowhere Rose, nowhere, you can't- you can't Rose. Please..." tears began to fall and panic edged into his voice as he begged her not to leave but he knew it was no use. He'd been too late and he couldn't save her. So many times he had worried this would happen and now it had. And he hadn't even seen who, or what, had shot her.

"Doctor, my Doctor... don't cry. T-this isn't your fault," she struggled to say it. Every word was hurting, just like every second was for him.

She was shuddering now, agony possessing, her but it wasn't even close to the pain The Doctor was feeling.

"YES IT IS! I bought you here! It was me who was supposed to protect you... I should never have bought you with me! I Sh-"

She cut him off and grasped his face desperately, holding his chin and pulling it closer to her.

"Now you listen to me you stupid man! I would rather have one day with you. You hear me? One day  and then die than have never have met you! This isn't sad and this isn't goodbye," The Doctor bit back his sobs and his whole body was shaking.

"Listen! I'm here aren't I? Right h-here, in your arms. And... here," she placed a shaking hand on his chest, where his hearts had been.

"And you're here," she grasped her chest and her fingers were stained red. "And you always will be. Admittedly my always is quite short, but still. It's all I've got," tears spilled down her cheeks and she began to shake harder.

"I don't want to go," she whispered. The doctor said nothing, words had failed him. He had nothing to say and he didn't feel anything he could think of was worthy. Worthy of the woman he...

"Rose.."

She looked up at him, her face pale, but she was distant. Fighting to hold on and failing. He held her broken body tighter in his arms, cradling her gently. He couldn't do anything. He just couldn't. His face was furious, what was the point of being called 'The Doctor', if he couldn't even help the people  he cared for the most?

"Rose, look at me, hey.. Rose!" Her breathing slowed and The Dctor closed his eyes. She was fading.

"Rose. Oh, Rose..."

Taking a deep breath he looked into the fiery blonde's glassy eyes... trying to find the words he had longed to say. He would burn up a whole sun just to keep her alive... He had to say it now though, tell her. It was his last chance...

"Rose Tyler, I,"

And then, in his arms, she went limp. And she was gone.
