—————John pulled his wool coat tighter over his shoulders, shivering from the strong winter cold. He let the door of the Gristedes close behind him as he stepped closer to the curb.
John heard a small crash behind him, and he whipped around to see that a man had fallen, his grocery bags scattered around him. The man groaned and got up. John noticed that a box of Fruit Loops had fallen out of one of the bags. He picked up the box of cereal and handed it back to the now upright man with a small smile.
"I believe you dropped this." He said teasingly as the man snatched the box back.
"Your smile..." John looked the man in the eyes, he had beautiful eyes. "May I just say how... superb your smile is?" A blush crept up John's face.
"A-ah! Thank you!" John said. How sweet. "Well, I'll see you around." John turned to leave, but the man gently grabbed his wrist.
John turned around expectantly. "Hey... what'cha doin' tomorrow? Because I'll be here." The man pointed to the sign across the street. "On the corner of Bleaker and Mercer tomorrow, at seven. If you wanna meet up, I'll be waiting right here." He smiled. "And- just in case there are two guys waiting for you, my name's Alexander." The two waved and then Alexander was gone.
Of course John had to go back the next day to meet him, just to see if he'd show. He glanced across the street of the Gristedes, at the Bleaker/Mercer signed. Surpised to see a familar face waving him down. John walked up to him, smiling.
Alexander caught his eye and smirked, holding out his hand for John to take. The two ate dinner at a quaint little café, which was perfect for the two of them. Alexander walked John to his house. "I had a lovely time, Alexander. Thank you."
Alexander combed his fingers through his hair. "Ah- it was nothing. Thank you for accepting."
The two stood there in slight awkwardly. "I-I should head inside. Should I expect a call from you anytime soon?" Asked John, Alexander nodded.
Alexander put one his hands on John's cheek, leaning in to plant a soft kiss on John's lips. John's face was painted red when they pulled apart.
"I'll see you around, Alexander. Thank you, again." The two shared another short, sweet kiss as John went inside.
The next week Alexander called John, asking if him if he wanted to meet up to see this new play that had just come out. Supposedly it was about one of the founding fathers, Lin-Manuel Miranda's life. John chuckled at the thought, and agreed.
The play was terrible, but amazing at the same time. Alexander and John once again kissed each other goodnight when they arrived at John's place.
The week after that John had caught a cold, so Alexander came over to take care of him. The two just cuddled and drank hot chocolate all day.
Suddenly, eight or nine months had flown by. Alexander had called John one night asking to meet up. Alexander's tone had made John nervous. John assumed Alexander was going to break up with him. He couldn't have been more wrong.
After their lunch date, they were messing around in Alexander's apartment. Alexander asked John to turn around for a surprise, when John turned back around Alexander was on one knee, holding up a black box with a beautiful ring inside. "Hey... what'cha doin' the rest of your life? Because I'll be here." John teared up at Alexander's sappy rendition of their first meeing. "Right beside you as long as you want me to be, there's no question."
John wiped away his tears as he took the ring from the box and kissed it. "There's nothing I've wanted so much in my life. This might sound immature, but I'm totally sure you're the one." The two shared a kiss and hugged each other close.
September rolled around, and the two were wed. Hoping to spend the rest of their lives together.
They bought an apartment together, on West Seventeenth Street. They were so happy.
Alexander promised that one day they would be financially stable enough to adopt a child and maybe get a dog. John couldn't wait.
Before either of them knew it, their first anniversary came in a flash. They promised to take the day off work, unfortunately Alexander had to step into his office that morning to grab some papers.
John wanted to surprise his husband when he got back, so he walked downtown to this bakery he knew. After getting his order, a certain article on the news had piqued his interest.
Towers Struck this AM.
John's blood ran cold, as soon as he walked outside he heard the sirens in the distance. "No, no, no!" The smoke had come into view.
John dropped his bakery order and ran back home with a feeling of dread. "Alex?!" He called as he ran into their apartment. No answer.
The answering machine was blinking, indicating a message. "Hey, babe. Listen, I'm getting pulled into a conference so I won't be home until about ten-ish. Is that okay? I love you, call me back when you get- HOLY FUCK-" Alexander was cut off by a horrifyingly loud crash. That was all John heard before the line went dead.
John could feel the color drain from his face, and he immediately burst into choked sobs. Clutching the sleeves of his shirt in order to try and comfort himself.
John curled into himself on the couch, not meeting the eyes of who was next to him. "Sorry," he chuckled tearfully. "I don't mean to ruin your evening by bringing up all of this stuff." He briskly wiped away a tear. "Heh. You're probably wondering why I even called you tonight. Well, today something happened that just... spooked me."
John recalled earlier that morning, he was clearing out one of the cupboards that hadn't been touched since Alexander... He pulled open the door, freezing when he saw some of Alexander's Fruit Loops, still there on the shelf.
He immediately felt tears stream down his face, and he curled up on the floor in hysterics, finding himself unable to calm down.
John could faintly hear Alexander's voice in his head. "Hey... you're allowed to move on. It's okay." John looked up, shock filling him. There was Alexander, or at least he thought. "Because I'll be here... Even if you decide to get rid of my favorite sweater." Alexander tugged gently on the sleeve of the sweater John was wearing. John brought his hand up, disappointed to know he couldn't feel Alexander's warm hand. "Even if you go out on my birthday this year, instead of sitting at home and letting all of life's moments pass by."
John felt a cold whisp as his ghostly husband tried to wipe a tear from his cheek. "You don't have to cry."
John launched himself into Alexander's translucent body, knowing he couldn't fully feel his husband's embrace. "I'll be here. When yo start going back to the places we went to together." John swore he could feel Alexander gently holding him, and he cried even harder. "When you take off your ring, and you let youself smile." John pulled away slightly to see Alexander's soft smile of encouragement. "When you meet someone handsome, and patient, and true. When he says that he wants to be married to you." The ghost cupped John's hand, John could see the faint outline of a tear falling down Alexander's face. "When he calls you one night and he meets you downtown. And you finally answer him yes."
"Yes." John choked out, finally meeting his boyfriend's eye, who looked at him hopefully. "Yes, Thomas. I will marry you." John leaned his head on Thomas' shoulder, and he wrapped an arm around John's smaller frame. "I will give you my heart. It has taken so, so long. But I'm ready to start." Thomas hugged John closely, planting gentle and reassuring kisses all over his forehead.
John could faintly hear Alexander's voice ringing "congrats" in his ear. He nuzzled in closer to his new fiancé, holding on of his hands and playing with Thomas' fingers. He finally mustered up all his courge.
"I will be here."
