—————"Washington gave me this report, Thomas. Quit trying to do my job for me!" Alexander laughed.
"Quit overworking yourself, then!"
John stiffled a groan of annoyance, covering his ears with the palms of his hands. Thomas and Alexander had been doing their little bickering bit all morning, and it had been getting more and more flirtatious, which was getting on John's nerves.
After a few more insufferable minutes, Thomas finally let John and Alexander do their work. But John noticed how distracted Alexander seemed today.
He made his way to Alexander's desk, the man in question was staring at the door, if he was in a cartoon he would probably have heart eyes. "Penny for your thoughts?" John chuckled awkwardly.
"Do you think Thomas would agree on a date?"
"Dunno, depends I guess. Who would want to go on a date with that prick though." Alexander didn't seem amused with John's joke and shot him a brief look.
John felt an uncomfortable lurch in his heart. "Did you want to ask him out? I thought you hated each other."
Alexander shrugged. "Maybe?" He took a sip from his coffee. "Damn, almost out already."
"Yeah I'm sure all the banter between you and your new 'boyfriend' leaves you a little thirsty, doesn't it?" John muttered bitterly, making his way back to his desk.
"Geez. What crawled up your ass and died?"
John didn't respond, turning his attention back to his work. Alexander shrugged again and did the same.
The awkward tension in the room eventually got too much and Alexander decided to break it. "Are you jealous or something?" John glanced up at him with a questioning glare. "Do you like Thomas? I've noticed you staring at him sometimes but I never thought anything of it."
John didn't say anything, and Alexander assumed that was confirmation. "Oh god- I'm sorry! If you want him you can have him, I'd prefer your happiness over-"
"Just shut up. I don't like Thomas." Alexander seemed slightly hurt, but nodded. "I'm sorry. It's just not a great day for me. I didn't mean to take it out on you."
Of course John couldn't tell Alexander that he'd been in love with him since they were in high school together, not now that John knew Alexander liked Thomas. Thomas was a nice enough guy, and Alexander deserves to be happy.
"Are you out of coffee? I can go get you some more." John rushed over to get Alexander's coffee mug and left their shared office, ignoring Alexander's pleas for him to come back.
John zoomed into the break room, locking the door behind him. His heart was racing and he felt like someone had reached into his chest and ripped out his heart. Of course Alexander would never love John back. That's such a stupid thing to think about.
He placed Alexander's mug next the coffee maker as he started a new brew. He scanned the cup. He recognized it as a gift John had given him for Christmas back in their second year of college. John almost smiled before the doorknob started jiggling.
A very agitated voice sounded from outside. "Goddamnit, Lee. I swear to God if you brought Seabury in here to fuck again I'm going to kill you." John identified the voice as Thomas' and he hurriedly unlocked it.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't realize I'd locked it." A lie, obviously, but Thomas didn't need to know that.
The latter scoffed quietly. Pushing past John. He opened the mini fridge and pulled out a can of Coke. The two shared a somewhat awkward silence, only being interrupted by the coffee machine beeping.
Thomas gave John a questioning stare. "Thought you didn't like coffee."
"It's for Alex."
"Oh." Thomas thought for a moment. "Do you like him?"
"Huh? Yeah, he's my best friend, has been since we were sophomores in highschool."
"That's not what I meant." John looked Thomas in the eyes. "If you like Alex, the way I like Alex then we're gonna have a bit of a problem."
Bemused, John gently shoved Thomas away. "My feelings for Alex are none of your concern."
"So you admit it then. That you like him."
"I admit nothing." John took the now full coffeepot and poured some into Alexander's mug, having known him since they were sophomores, he knew Alexander preferred just black coffee. Gross.
Thomas came up behind John and snatched the mug away. He read the words on the mug. "'To my favoritest best friend, Merry Christmas?' Y'all are weird."
"Give it back, Jefferson." John tried to reach for the cup but accidentally knocked Thomas backwards, spilling the hot coffee all over his white shirt. Thomas winced at the burning and dropped the cup, instantly shattering it.
John gasped and tried to pick up the shards, but Alexander came bursting through the door. "I heard glass breaking! Is everyone okay?"
Thomas was sitting in the floor, trying to clean off his shirt, and John was helplessly picking up shards of glass. Thomas stammered for a second, before speaking up.
"I-I was just trying to help John with the mug— when he just threw it at me out of nowhere!"
John gasped and turned to Alexander. "I didn't! I was trying to get it back from him because he stole it. I swear it was an accident."
But Alexander didn't speak, he just stared at the broken shards of glass. John noticed this and started to panic. "Please—please believe me! I wouldn't break this mug, I know how much you love it."
Suddenly, Thomas was on his feet and trying to comfort Alexander. "It's okay, don't worry about the mug, I'll buy you a new one. An unbreakable one so the next time John decides-"
"That was my favorite mug. You can't just replace it." Alexander picked up the remaining pieces from the ground and stared at John. "I can't believe you would break it."
"But— Alex!"
"I knew you were jealous but I didn't think you would go this far!"
"Alex... I..." John couldn't find the words. "You're just going to believe Thomas like that? You're not even giving me a chance to defend myself!"
Thomas wrapped an arm around Alexander's shoulder. "I think it's best you leave now, John. Before you mess things up even more."
John was angry, so angry. At Thomas, at Alexander, but mainly at himself. "I'VE KNOWN YOU FOR SIXTEEN YEARS AND YOU TAKE THOMAS'S SIDE EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE ONLY KNOWN HIM FOR ONE." John didn't know when he started crying, but suddenly he was wiping tears from his eyes. "I THOUGHT I MEANT MORE TO YOU THAN THAT."
Alexander opened his mouth to speak but John cut him off. "NO—IT'S MY TURN. IT'S NOT FAIR FOR YOU TO TAKE HIS SIDE. I LOVED YOU FIRST. GOD I'VE LOVED YOU SINCE I FIRST MET YOU AND I THOUGHT MAYBE YOU WOULD FEEL THE SAME BUT NO." John sobbed. "No... you like the guy who treats everyone like they're below him. You choose the guy who only ever uses other people for his own personal gain and you know what? I don't care anymore." John glared up at Thomas "Fuck you."
With that, John stormed out of the break room, ignoring Alexander, who he knew had started crying. But he wouldn't go back. Not anymore.
