"Pa?" Addie asks quietly, gently tugging on my shirt. "Are you okay? Do you want to talk about what happened?"
"No," I answer plainly, continuing to make the kids' breakfast.
"Auralie says that you'll feel better if you talk to someone about it."
"I said no!" I shout.
Addie lets go of my shirt and steps away. She sniffles and then leaves the kitchen. But someone taps my arm. I sigh and turn to them. It's Auralie, unsurprisingly.
I know you're upset with Michael, she signs. But remember that he still loves you. She gives me a sad smile. He's had a bad life. It takes a lot of time to heal from that.
How do you know that he's had a bad life? I ask.
I asked him why he has nightmares every night.
I nod my head in understanding.
Did you and Michael get in a fight because he needs time to heal? she asks.
I'm not sure. I don't understand what we fought about. He was saying different things at the same time, so it was hard to keep up. I think about what I'm going to say next. I think you're right, though.
Of course, I'm right, she signs cockily. She sticks her tongue out at me, waves goodbye, and wheels away.
