The Mating Game
"Hi I'm Maddy!" she exclaimed; a bright smile was upon her beautiful face and an undeniable glow of happiness gleamed off of her.
Great, I thought, another Ferra.
"Hi. " I deadpanned, reluctantly taking her outstretched hand and shaking it. I knew I wasn't being particularly nice, but we walked up the steps all of five seconds before she bombarded us with her over eagerness. She had an eagerness I simply could not share. I was not too enthused by what occurred In our first round. In fact, I wasn't enthused about the damn game at all.
"Ignore my friend, she can be a bitch sometimes. Hi I'm Ferra! " Ferra greeted the girl and then wrapped her in a welcoming hug.
Ferra released the girl and they started talking as though they'd known one another for years, rambling off like there was no tomorrow.
"The girls have been dropping like flies, you'd be surprised how many of them have done no training at all despite being daughters of alphas. It's really sad actually." Maddy continued.
This didn't surprise me, most shewolves were not actually expected to act on roles of power. They were simply titles, all their responsibility usually landed on their mates if they were in a position of power. They weren't expected to fight or to worry about pack protection, they did the more domestic duties like cooking and taking care of the young. As a child I was more Interested in fighting though, I was a tomboy to the extreme. My mother was so convinced I was a boy trapped in a girls body. It wasn't typical for a woman to be trained as I was to become alpha, but being that I was my parent's only child (even though they tried for years) my father expected me to fully fill his role despite gender discrimination that was common among wolves. But as the daughters of alphas we typically got more training than the average Shewolf. We were expected to have some combat experience. Still it didn't shock me that most alphas neglected their duty of actually making sure their daughters got combat training. It was sad really.
"So far there's only four of us here including you guys. But I've probably watched about fifteen different people go through the first challenge. I suppose it really isn't fair since we weren't expecting to be bombarded like that upon arriving, but they need good competitors ya'know?"
"Oh wow that's shocking, fifteen huh? Well where's the other girl? " Ferra asked, she seemed genuinely curious. She probably couldn't wait to add an addition to her friendship club.
Maddy scrunched up her nose at the question, "I've been trying to get her to talk since I got here. She was the first person here. But she's as exciting as a brick wall. And as talkative as a mime. I didn't even get her name out of her. All she did was glare before opening up a book and starting to read. "
Now this girl seemed like she was my type of person.
"So where are we supposed to put our things? " I asked. We'd been standing in the hallway for about five minutes talking and Ryder, being the most unfriendly and unhelpful house host possible, had disappeared the minute our feet touched the first step of the staircas. He left us without any directions.
"Ryder didn't tell you? Well this is our wing of the house, on this floor there are about fifteen bedrooms. You're free to pick which one you want. It's first come. And there's a den area up here too. It's pretty big and is equipped with a few games, a TV, lounge chairs, and even a refrigerator with all sorts of goodies. The Alpha Howl has his own wing that we aren't allowed in. Ironically this is the wing with the kitchen so we have to basically ask, like we're kids or something, just to go in there. But supposedly he'll still be handling a lot of pack business while here so he needs to utmost respect and privacy. Y'all know how serious their pack is. "Maddy explained and it took a moment for my brain to process the overload of information.
