I laughed at the question. Gryffindors definitely asks these kinds of questions more than Ravenclaws. Why? Because Ravenclaws can answer it within the blink of an eye.
"All I know about time is that.. it's really fast when you're in heaps of the moment, and it goes oh-so-damn slow when boredom pays you a little visit." I spoke, staring lazily into the fireplace in front of us.
"Eloise, you have got to think out of the box!" My best friend Cordelia groaned in exhaustion, leaning back into the old red couch of our common room.
"It's the third time this day you've been asking me Ravenclaw-ish questions, Del. Forgive me for being a Gryffindor who couldn't care less about time." I rolled my eyes.
Thinking about time itself makes me stressed, what kind of person would dwell into something as stressful as the concept of time?
Something as intangible as time shouldn't be used for a little chit-chatting. I can already feel my brain rotting just thinking about it.
"Excuse me, you have told me countless times that you have always dreamt of working in the Department of Mysteries someday since we were first years. You should be thanking me." Cordelia pointed a finger at me, squinting her eyes.
"That was our first year, right now I couldn't care less about anything so I just want to live in the moment. Cedric Diggory just passed away a few months ago, so let's not talk vividly about the future which I'm not even sure would exist by then!" I snapped, the memory from the Quidditch World Cup reliving itself in my mind.
Cordelia looked at me with shock, it has been a reoccurring moment that I snapped at someone.
Realizing my choice of words and my tone, I cleared my throat. "Sorry, Del. I'm still shaken with everything that happened."
That has always been the drill, I'm the one easily anxious and rhetorically thinks about everything, while Cordelia takes the role of being composed and the critical-thinker.
"It's all right, I'm also sorry for opening the topic." Cordelia spoke sheepishly. "Let's just shift topics.. I guess."
"That would be better." I nodded in agreement, feeling my heart slowly sinking in my stomach once again.
Cedric Diggory may not have been a close friend, but thinking about how it could've been anyone in the school makes me scared. His death kept me awake for a week.
"I'm.. quite curious about the new subjects this year. Have you seen the syllabus for Care of Magical Creatures? Professor Kettleburn mentioned something about exploring magical creatures native to Britain." I spoke, changing the topic immediately.
Cordelia perked up at the mention of our new classes. "Oh, that sounds fascinating! I've always wanted to learn more about the creatures living in the Forbidden Forest.. I just know Hagrid would be able to make things interesting this year! And what about Ancient Runes? Have you started translating those old texts yet?"
I shook my head, smiling at her enthusiasm. "Not yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I heard Professor Babbling is a tough instructor, but she's brilliant. It'll be a challenge, but I think it'll be worth it."
"I hope Trelawmey won't be as eccentric as before. Remember that class where she thought she saw a Grim in everyone's teacup?" Cordelia snorted.
I chuckled, recalling the absurdity of that lesson. "I hope so too. But honestly, I'm more worried about Potions with Professor Snape. His reputation for favoritism is notorious."
