You close your eyes, sinking further and further down into the water. You were too tired to swim back up.
This is it, you thought. This is how I die.
But you weren't panicked anymore; you had accepted the possibility of death the moment you began to tire. You already used up all of your tears begging and pleading with God to let you live. You already used all of your energy thrashing in the water. However, you were still disappointed; disappointed in yourself.
You were disappointed that you lived life the way you did.
Sure, you were a good person; you helped people out, you were never impolite, and you had always put others first.
But were you a great person?
You never made a name for yourself. You stayed in the shadows, only ever making a few friends. Sure, people knew who you were, but you never got a chance to show them what you could be.
Or perhaps you did have a chance– you just never took it.
It was too late to ponder the possibilities of what you could of been. You couldn't change the past (and there certainly wasn't a future). Maybe there is an afterlife, however. One that allows you to find some other person to be for the rest of eternity. Someone who you felt mattered.
As you took your final breath, you felt the warmth slowly trickle out of your body.
