Life's New Purpose

My name is Noa. A half Na'vi, half human hybrid with nowhere to belong to. Until today that is. A terrible battle broke out between the humans and the Na'vi, and as someone who has blood from both sides, it tears me apart to not be on either of them. After the lifeboat I escaped on was attacked and sinking, I managed to slip away and swim to a rock, a small island of sorts. Where I saved the life of Neteyam Sully and where his father, Jake Sully, decided to take me in. And now, I'm sitting around a campfire in the midst of a celebration. Celebrating the downfall of the sky people. It is dark, the only light coming from the fire and torches. I sit semi- on my own on a log off to the side and out of the way of everyone's attention. I don't fit in here, I am alien. I stare at the bowl of foreign food in my hands, it tastes alright so I won't complain. The breeze feels unfamiliar on my exposed skin. They had me change into local attire, my stripes and tail on full display for everyone to see. I pull it closer to me. With the noise of the music and laughter, the dancing and cheering, overstimulation begins to set in as I try to block it all out when a taller, dark blue figure appears next to me. I look up to see none other than Neytiri.

"Do you mind?" She said to me in English. I shook my head no and scooted over to give her space. She sat down beside me and let out a long sigh. "You've barely touched your food, are you not feeling well?" She speaks in a tone that resembles that of an adult speaking to a toddler.

I spare her a glance and look back to my bowl, my ears twitch downwards as she sighs again. "I am sorry for yelling earlier... I do not trust the sky people. Not after what they've done." I looked up at her, surprised to hear an apology.

"No, it's alright. I get it. You almost lost your son, I would have yelled at me too." I joked. Neytiri humored me with a small laugh. "He is okay now, thanks to you. He should be asleep for a while but that is better than not having him awaken at all." She takes my five fingered hand in her larger four fingered one and squeezes it tight. I look her in the eyes to see that they are smiling at me. "I thank you. You saved my son, thank you."

I gulped back the saliva building in my mouth. Those words of thanks opened the floodgates of emotions I didn't even know I was holding back. The tears started to swell and despite how hard I tried to hold it in, my lips began to quiver, the beginnings of a crying fit showing on my face. "Oh Noa..." Neytiri cooed, pulling me in for a hug which broke the last bit of resolve that I had.

"No one's ever thanked me before..." I muttered as I began to bawl into the older woman's shoulder. She rubbed my back and continued to thank me and hold me close. I'm sure this was not a private occurrence, that everyone had stopped their partying to notice me crying in the corner. The rest of the Sully family came over to us. Jake's hand on my shoulder, Kiri kneeling down in front of me with a sad smile on her face, Lo'ak shaking his head while also smiling, and little Tuk hugging me from the side like her mother.

Once I had settled down I spent the remainder of the night laughing and playing around with the children of the Sully family, Tsireya and Ao'nung joined us as well. After the festivities died down, they led me to their marui, which is a small tent like home built into the mangrove. I noticed that Neteyam is not inside, which means that he must be sleeping in a separate place meant for recovery, perhaps alongside the other injured Na'vi. Kiri rolled out a mat on a spot next to hers, "You can sleep here Noa." she patted it as she sat down on her own. "Aw no fair! I wanted her to sleep next to me!" Tuk complained, making me laugh. "You can pull yours next to mine and then everyone will be happy." I said and patted the empty spot on the floor next to me. Tuk happily complied, the rustling sound could be heard throughout the marui as she pulled it next to mine. "Gosh you guys are so loud." Lo'ak grumbled and turned over on his mat, his back facing us. I could hear Jake and Neytiri chuckle at his expense, Spider snickering in the corner, and soon it was quiet. All except the wind and the waves were still. With the natural white noise of the Pandoran night I fell asleep instantly, my tail laying over myself comfortably.
