"Oel Nati kamie?" I tested the words on my lips while copying the hand movement Kiri showed me.
"No silly!" she laughed at the pitiful attempt before readjusting herself, crossing her legs sitting directly in front of me. "Oel ngati kameie" she explained.
"Oel ngati kameie." I repeated, doing the movement again. This time Kiri seemed pleased enough at my pronunciation. "Make sure you say that first when we go see her, you need to show your respect if you're going to ask her a favor." Kiri said, patting my shoulder as she stood up. "It'll go great I'm sure." Tuk said from across the room lying on her stomach. Kiri helps me to my feet and I go over to ruffle Tuks hair. "Thanks Tuk, if all goes well I'll know it's because you said so." I gave her a smile and together, Kiri and I left the marui, off to find the Tsahik in question. We found her inside the healer's marui. It's admirable how much she does to take care of her people. As we walk up to her Kiri stops short behind me as I put what I learned this morning into practice. I touched my hand to my forehead and brought it down, "I see you Ronal." I peer up slightly at her waiting for her response and hoping I didn't do it wrong. Ronal gave an amused huff and returned my gesture.
"Why do you seek me child?" she asks.
I look behind at Kiri who is giving me a thumbs up and then back at Ronal. "I know how I can be useful to the village." she seems to question me with her eyes so I continue. "I want to become a healer. And it would be a great honor if you trained me yourself." I finished, looking at her with confident eyes. She made a face, showing her skepticism.
"And what makes you think you'll be good enough to be trained by me?"
"But-" Kiri started, immediately rushing up to try and back me up. I held out my arm urging her to stop. "With all due respect, I happen to be very good at medicine. And with your help, I know I'd make a valuable addition to the healers here. Your husband said that I should be trained so I can be useful, should you really deny tha-"
"Help! Somebody help us please!" everyone's attention turns to the entrance to see two young boys about Tuks age. One is being held up by the other, his calf bloody and bruising. Ronal turned to look at me and opened her mouth to speak but decided against it. She shook her head in frustration, marching up to the boys to get a closer look. Kiri and I follow behind her timidly. "What is this?" she motioned to the wound "What happened?" The boy's friend helped him onto a mat so Ronal could get a closer look. Now that I can see the wound clearly it's obvious that it's a bite wound from something about the size of an ilu.
"He was bitten by a pincer fish- I told you you should've left it alone!" The boy who had carried his friend into the marui scolded the boy who I'm sure wasn't hearing him because he was groaning in pain. Getting a closer look it seemed like it wasn't going to heal on its own.
"It looks like he's going to need stitches..." I murmured. Ronal took interest in me when I said this. "You seem to have a plan?" she asked. I looked up at her, shocked that she was speaking to me. "I think it would be a good idea to do a deep wound closure and then stitch it shut. It will leave a scar but that's unavoidable with this kind of wound." The boy looked at me worried, I guess nobody wants an ugly scar, human or Na'vi.
"Do it then." Ronal stated simply.
"P-pardon?"
"You wish to learn don't you? Show me that I wouldn't be wasting my time." She crossed her arms giving me a look that said 'you get one chance.' Kiri gave me a look of encouragement. "You got this." she whispered. And you know what? She's right. I've watched enough videos on how to close wounds to know how to do it even in my sleep. This is my only chance to prove to Ronal that I'm worth teaching. "Ok, I'm going to go wash my hands, um- could you get me something to clean his wound, thread, a needle and a bowl please?" I said to the girl who had tended to Neteyam the day before. She looked at Ronal unsure but after seeing how serious her face was, hesitantly went to get the things I asked for. I rushed off to wash my hands somewhere. It's going to be hard to be sterile in an environment like this but I need to try my best. When I got back, all the things I needed were set out on a small table. I kneeled down beside the boy who was still in pain and quietly hushed him. "It's going to be ok. Here." I handed him a rag. "It's going to hurt a bit so I want you to bite down on this when you feel like screaming ok?" he nodded his head and took the rag from me.
