POV: Murderer
A quiet night in western style: all you could hear was the screaming of the wind beating against the window shutters, the faint accompaniment of rhythm and blues barely wafting from Romero's family 24/7 saloon; suddenly striving to burst into the open balcony fetid, almost dizzying smell of gasoline near the gas station mixed with horse dung and river water from the irrigation tank, and only the sleepy mumbling of little Dahlia was broking all the poetry of this night. She's buried in Ivy's shoulder like a kitten soon nevertheless unwittingly alarmed her sister. Ivy with half-opening her eyes looked out the window first automatically concentrating on the eerily familiar guitar solo. The solo continued to echo through the silent night, like a lamentation singing its sorrowful melody through the open window. A gentle tug at her shoulder brought Ivy out of her meditative trance, and she looked down at Dahlia laying in her arms. Ivy looked at her who continued to curl up and sob plaintively. Ivy took her sister by the shoulders and gently shook her. Dahlia yelled out as if it were some kind of sabotage signal, "PLAGUE!", after which quickly jumped up and sat on the bed dangling her legs. Ivy could see that what was bothering Dahlia was something much deeper than just nightmare.Dahlia was usually pretty carefree and playful, so the sight of her curled up and sobbing was pretty unsettling.Ivy kept a light grip on her sister's shoulders with a gentle and soothing tone in her voice tried to ask Dahlia what was really bothering her. But before asking, Ivy hugged her tightly and stroked her head. After sitting with her like this for a couple of minutes and making sure that her sister calmed down, Ivy was already beginning:
"What did you see this time?"
Dahlia just continued to pout and dangle her legs without responding, which meant that her sister was probably going to need to be particularly persuasive and patient in order to get her to open up. Ivy waited a little, knowing that now or later she finally will get the respond.
"...Darling?"
"PLAGUE!" Girl cried out loud.
"Tell me, isn't what you and I saw on the cards last time?"
Dahlia shook her head right and left:
"No, there was a grasshopper! Huge green grasshopper in the desert with dust. There are also tumbleweeds and strong winds. The name of the grasshopper is Plague and he controls these wind and dust. And we die. But it's kind of... invisible, you know? Although the grasshopper controls them himself, he's still afraid of them, they are scary! He has a mask on. But the mask is like... with the circles on both sides, you know?"
Ivy's eyes widened as she heard what Dahlia was saying. The girl spoke so matter-of-factly that she seemed almost convinced of what she was talking about, despite the apparent absurdity of it all. Dahlia's dream seemed incredibly specific and vivid, almost like she was recounting a real event rather than a dream. Whatever the case, it was clear that the girl was concerned about what she had seen. Ivy gently squeezed her sister's shoulder once more as she asked her more about the vision she had received:
"I understood, something like a respirator... Dahlia, this virus came to you again in a dream only in the form of a grasshopper. Last time on the cards we got the Executioner. The same night the virus came to me in the appearance of an invasion of the Ku Klux Klan. D'you remember what I told you about the Ku Klux Klan? Dahlia...?" Ivy couldn't believe her sister's vision was so oddly specific, and the strange parallels she had drawn in her mind between a viral outbreak and a terrorist group was disturbing. Ku Klux Klan were a white supremacist organisation that had been active during the 19th and early 20th centuries and had perpetrated many violent acts. This time, Dahlia's vision seemed to revolve around a viral outbreak -- the two didn't seem particularly connected on the surface, but the girl seemed convinced that they were indeed related. Anyway, right now Dahlia had already drifted off to sleep again lying on Ivy's shoulder. I wonder if this is her normal reaction to stressful situations or this child so exploited by agricultural work so she simply turns off without a trace under in any circumstances? Ivy could see that her sister was still dealing with a lot of anxiety, so she continued to hold her close and provide her with that gentle and soothing presence. She was about to follow her sister's example but the peace of the room was again disturbed. The massive attic hatch inlaid with many gilded locks, rose so abruptly that Ivy caught her breath in surprise. In the pre-dawn darkness Ivy has see the shadow silhouette of her older brother Marco as he rapidly continued up the stairs to her quarters. The noise of the stairs creaking under a heavy step made Ivy freeze in her tracks. She knew immediately that she wasn't the only one who was awake in the house. And the fact that it was her older brother Marco made her even more worried. Marco had a history of causing trouble in the past, and for him to suddenly come up here in the middle of the night was not a good sign.
