It was a day like any other, the birds were singing, the weather was sunny, and Oliver Shmitt, a 13 year old boy, was reading under the shade of the big oak that belonged to the orphanage he lived at. Oliver had lived at the orphanage for as long as he could remember, and though he didn't have any actual family, the other kids at the orphanage were like his siblings.
"Oliver! ma' wants ya!" a boy with orange hair and freckles yelled from the doorway of the house.
"kay Collin! ill be down in a sek!" Oliver replied.
As he gathered his things, Oliver had an unusual feeling of foreboding, but it instantly dissipated as he entered the warm abode.
"hi ma' what'd ya want?" Oliver said when he saw the woman known as 'ma'. Ma's real name was Mrs.Alvor but all the kids called her ma.
"ah, Oliver yes, please sit down" she said and gestured to the empty chair next to her. Oliver obliged and sat. "you are aware of the laws instated by the relans correct?"
Oliver thought for a second, these so called 'laws' stated that twice every year, during the winter and summer solstices 7 children at the age of 16 were chosen to go to royal city as sacrifices for the royal feast. it was a sick law. the relans were cruel beasts that looked like humans but 70 times the size. they also took great pleasure in eating humas.
"y-yes ma'am but what does that hafta do with me?" he asked nervously
"well...you have been uh...oh I don't know how to put it lightly!" she said and her eyes became glassy.
"put what lightly...?"
"Oliver *sniff* you have been chOsEn" she said, tears now running down her cheeks.
Oliver felt his blood drain from his face. he had been chosen, the worst thing that possibly happen to a teenager like him.
"I-" Oliver tried to speak but he felt as if someone had shoved a golfball sized lump down his throat. "I-*ahem* h-how long have you known?" he said, retrieving his voice.
"I got the letter yesterday, you have till your 16th birthday" she said weakly. Oliver starred at has hands in disbelief, he was going to die in less then 3 years. "I'll leave you to your thoughts" Mrs.Alvon said as she ushered him out.
Oliver laid in bed starring up at the celling completely devastated from the earlier news. his 14th birthday was in 2 months and then what? he would never be able to enjoy another day, knowing he was doomed to death.
to be chosen wasn't uncommon but there was always hope, if you survived your 16th birthday then it was unlikely to be chosen. Oliver had always just assumed that he wouldn't be chosen since it was unlikely, so the news that he had been chosen for the relans' 2051 summer solstice feast had crushed him.
he continued to think until he was to tired to stay conscious.
hello! what do you think? hope you like the story so far, its going to be great! well be sure to vote and comment
