chapter three.   are you coming, wolf boy?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

When she got home, Dani was eager to climb in her bed and nap for at least three hours, but it seemed her dad and Becky had other plans.

"Hey sweetheart," Gregory greeted from another room, entering the foyer as Dani shut the front door behind her. "How was your day?"

She eyed him as she hung up her keys, mustering a faux smile. "It was fine. I could really just use a nap right now."

"Well before you go–" Greg stopped her, Dani giving him a stare of blank confusion.

"Before you go, Becky and I wanted to talk to you for just a minute."

Just as he said that, Becky appeared in the doorway leading from the kitchen to the foyer, giving Dani a timid smile. Dani looked between her dad and stepmom, frowning.

"What's going on?" She folded her arms, awaiting a response.

Greg and Rebecca exchanged hesitant looks, until finally she spoke up.

"Um, well... it's about Connor."

Dani's heart skipped a beat, wondering if they knew Connor's secret too. But she didn't say anything yet, waiting for Becky to elaborate.

She continued, "Back in Arizona, Connor... he tended to get in trouble a lot. I thought– or at least, I hoped– that moving to Beacon Hills would be kind of a fresh start for him, and maybe he wouldn't get in as much trouble."

Narrowing her eyes, Dani chewed her inner lip. "Okay... so what does this have to do with me?"

More hesitancy. Dani was growing annoyed, and it was visible in her body language.

"We were wondering if you might be able to... keep an eye on him," Greg chanced, slightly wincing at his words. "Just to make sure he stays out of trouble."

The gears in Dani's mind were already in a rapid whir, the girl almost smiling with devilish undertones. She held back her smirk, raising her shoulders.

"Yeah, sure."

There were simultaneous looks of surprise from both Rebecca and Gregory, taken aback that Dani so willingly agreed.

"Really?" Becky questioned, raising her eyebrows. "W-Wow. Thank you, Dani. I'm glad that I can trust you."

Dani returned her stepmom's smile, though it was forced and completely fake. She folded her hands behind her, rocking on her heels.
