The moon shone through the half-open window, the chilly air making the curtains sway back and forth in a nightly dance. Charlotte sat in her desk chair, the lamp rays casting golden light upon the documents scattered about her desk. She sighed, rummaging through a few more binders, when she heard the door creak open. Will walked inside, stopping abruptly when he realized Charlotte was in the room. Without a moment's delay, Will hurried to the opposite wall, in hopes that Charlotte would just continue with her work.
"Where in the three realms are you going, Will?" Charlotte inquired, looking up from her desk with a peering glance.
"Just off to see a friend in close neighborhood," Will replied nonchalantly, dangling a letter in his hand and smiling. He continued across the room to obtain his jacket that he had left there from earlier.
"Will," Charlotte replied sternly, letting out a sigh, "you could be all the way in Wales for aught I know."
"Settle down, Charlotte," Will laughed, wrapping himself in his overcoat, "I can assure you that I am not on a wild goose chase again."
"And Tessa?" Charlotte asked, resting her chin on her hand.
"What about my darling, Tessa? Are you implying that she's a wild goose?" Will stared at Charlotte, his expression replicating utter shock.
"I suggest you do tell Tessa of this shenanigan of yours," Charlotte began, fixing her stare upon the letter in Will's hand. "And is that an Emerald Etching?"
Seeing Charlotte's expression of complete surprise, Will hastily folded his hands behind his back.
"William Owen Herondale," Charlotte heaved a great sigh, "would you be a dear and give me that letter at once?" Her tone was icy. She extended her arm out to Will, waiting for him to place the letter in her hand.
"Charlotte, it really is none of your business," Will said, his expression turning glum with defeat.
"Will, it is nothing but my business. I do not mean to raise your ideas, but I care about your safety," Charlotte frowned.
Will hesitantly handed the letter over to Charlotte.
"Why do you vex me so, Will? You remind me of Henry sometimes," Charlotte shook her head, opening the letter.
"Sorry, Charlotte," Will responded with a sincere tone, "I've just been on this case for weeks, and I finally think I'm getting somewhere."
"We always get somewhere eventually, Will," Charlotte said, scanning the letter, "but there is a right way of doing so."
"Please, Charlotte," Will pled, "at least let me see where this letter was sent from."
"I don't know Will," Charlotte responded, "I'm all too familiar with traps. We both know what the Emerald Etching may signify."
"I swear on the Angel Raziel that I will only scout the location from afar," Will responded, a tinge of hope in his voice.
"Alright, Will, alright," Charlotte announced at last, handing him the letter, "but please do not do anything that will put you at risk."
"Dear Charlotte, though our lives are always put at risk, I promise to you that I will be careful. I know you're still getting used to who I am now, but now I know the worth of my own being, and with that said, I have learned that every inch of my soul wants to live," Will gave a small smile, then turned to walk away.
"Oh, and Will?" Charlotte asked. Will turned back around, fixing Charlotte with a curious expression. "I apologize for worrying so much."
Taking a step forward and placing his hand atop of Charlotte's, Will replied, "Do not blame yourself for worrying. That is what mothers do, is it not?" And with that, Will walked out of the room.
