["Not again."]
❦
If anything, at least I know how she really feels.
I didn't sleep all night, thinking why the hell I did to make her mad at me again. But she came, probably not because of me and certainly not because of Yi, but because of Eliana and her commitment to solving her case.
We haven't spoken a word since she arrived and now we're walking into Kennedy's house and I'm trying to get her attention by running my fingernails over my metal rings.
"Can you stop that." It was more of a threat than a question, but I stop anyway. At least she told me something. "You're level is–"
"You're not my level l–" I bite my tongue, stopping myself from saying something else I know I'll regret.
I look up at Maria catching a small smirk before she answers. "Don't worry, I'll get down to your level." And just like that, she turns into another corridor leaving behind a smirking Yi and me…trying to keep following her.
Harper patted my back before walking past me.
"We've only been here two minutes and we're already lost." Maria complains, turning around. "And all this looks strange, there are no guards, not even servants. We'd better go home."
"Nobody's going anywhere." I blurt out, stopping her in her tracks. "We came here to see what happened, we need answers, but if you want to go home and hide under the covers, then feel free."
She just lifted her chest, gritting her teeth before turning and continuing to look around the room.
Why am I like this? Probably to forget my feelings for her. So how would I forgot them. So how could I stop thinking about her every day, night, now, second. To move her out of Antonio's reach, even if I have to risk our friendship to keep her safe, I would.
She won't know. She must not know. She would never forgive me for that.
The closer I get to her, the more she moves away from me. I'll survive, this isn't a bullet, but it hurts like one.
"What floor are we on?" Maria asked, and I'm pretty sure the question was directed more at Yi.
"Uhh, third or, wait! Maybe it's second, I don't know."
"How do you not know, didn't you count the stairs?"
Yi throws his hands in the air. "How can I count them when they're going round and round!? I mean, they're so confused–"
"Third." I said. "We're on the third floor." But that's why none of us know where he is.
Maria sighed. "It doesn't matter, this won't work." Maria cranes her neck, the ends of her ponytail entwining through her fingers. "Maybe if–"
