It was all very ironic.
Adrien assumed that he would be in big trouble when he got home after his fencing lesson. Amelie already threatened to pull him from school for fighting again, and throwing Felix down to the floor definitely seemed to fall into that category.
It had been necessary though. Felix made a move on Marinette again, so he fully deserved it.
Arriving home, Adrien prepared himself for the worst. He was surprised, however, when Amelie greeted him with a huge smile. "How was practice?" she asked.
"Fine," he replied hesitantly, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
"Felix told me what happened. I am so sorry that he disturbed your lesson and bothered Marinette again."
He kept waiting.
"So, I'm assuming that she won't be joining us for dinner this evening," Emilie continued. "Which is a shame, but I don't blame her." A pause. "Felix will be sleeping in his old bedroom again tonight, and that means that Gabriel will be bunking with you. It will be a great opportunity for you two to spend more quality time together."
Now Adrien frowned, unsure if he should be happy or not. Neither Felix nor Gabriel were exactly his roommate of choice.
"So run along upstairs, and I'll see you for dinner."
"Okay," he murmured, then slowly made his way toward the stairs.
"Oh, and Adrien?" she called after him.
Cringing, he spun around to face her. Time for his punishment. "Yes?"
"I almost forgot to tell you, you and Felix are no longer grounded." Done with all her messages, she gave him an extra smile and turned away. Then she went into Gabriel's study and closed the door.
Left behind, Adrien was beyond shocked. He must be hallucinating; there was no way that Amelie let him off the hook for fighting Felix. And not only that, but she took away his prior punishment too.
And yet, that's exactly what happened.
Was it surprising? Yes. Was it unexpected? Yes. Did it make any sense at all? No.
It made absolutely no sense, but at the end of the day it didn't matter why things happened as they did. He wasn't grounded anymore, and that would give him the opportunity to see Marinette more often.
So he happily took the steps two at a time up the staircase and went to his room. After checking that Gabriel wasn't there yet, he took his phone out to text Marinette the good news.
Plagg flew out of his shirt. "Did you find that as strange as I did?" he asked.
Adrien gave him a shrug, keeping his eyes on his phone. "Yeah." Then he said no more while he typed.
"Your aunt has been acting really strange lately."
"She's my mom, and yeah she has. Maybe she just feels weird about Gabriel being in town or something."
"But she's the one who invited him," the kwami pointed out.
Getting annoyed by the pestering, Adrien groaned. "Look Plagg, I don't know why she's acting so strange. Just be happy that we're not grounded anymore."
"Why would I be happy about that? I hate transforming. I'm perfectly happy being right here close to my beloved Camembert!"
"Well, don't forget that Marinette lives at a bakery, which has plenty of bread to go along with your cheese."
At the mention of the food, Plagg had to pause. "Actually, I changed my mind," he said. "Transforming isn't so bad."
And Adrien shook his head as he flew away. Then he finished typing the message before hitting send.
