Anaya's POV
BREAKING NEWS: A MASSIVE SHOOTOUT OCCURRED AROUND 06:00AM THIS MORNING IN FRONT OF LOCAL BAR IN BROOKLYN NEW YORK. IT IS SUSPECTED THAT SHOOT OUT WERE BETWEEN TWO RIVAL GANGS. THREE WERE DEAD UPON ARRIVAL TO THE HOSPITAL WHILE ONE OF THEM IS STILL IN EMERGENCY CARE. POLICE ARE TRYING TO GET AHOLD OF ANY CCTV FOOTAGE OF THE INCIDENT TO IDENTIFY THE REMAINING SUSPECTS.
Well that's just what anyone wants to hear to start off their Monday morning. I sighed at the morning news as I poured the liquid batter into the pan and made my way to turn the volume of the television down. These shootouts between these gangs will never stop. Everyone knows the police aren't doing anything much either. They just show up and arrest those who are present in the act and call it a day.
I flipped my pancake over and began to make some coffee. Looks like I'll be needing a lot of this today. Usually I'll have two coffees a day since I work from home but today I have a bit of extra work on my hands. I placed the pancake onto a plate before drizzling it in maple syrup and chopping up some strawberries on the side.
"Alia!" I shouted as I began pouring the second batch of pancake batter into the pan. "Breakfast is ready!"
" Coming ma, i'm getting ready" a tiny voice yelled back. I turned my attention back to my pancakes to flip them when I heard my phone receive a message. I gently flipped my pancake over before moving to checking my message.
NEHA
Meet me at Old Joe's at 9 xx.
Looks like we definitely are getting more coffee. I placed my phone down when I heard the sound of little feet running down the halls.
" Good Morning mama" she said with a smile before making her way to her seat and diving into a plate in front of her. She wore a long red and black polka dotted dress that I got her last Christmas with her favorite lace ruffled socks and black shoes.
"Good morning my baby" I smiled widely as I made my way towards her and placed a kiss onto her cheek. " You look beautiful as always".
"So do you mama" she responded before plopping her strawberries into her mouth.
I smiled at my little girl before making my way into the living room to retrieve a hair brush and other hair products. One thing you must know about Alia is that she loves her hair styles, especially braids. I always let her choose her hairstyles; it's her way of expressing herself.
" So what hairstyle are we choosing for our first day of school?" I asked as I made my way back into the kitchen. I placed the hair products onto the counter and stepped behind her before gently unbraiding her hair from last night.
" French braids!" she yelled excitedly as she munched on pancakes. I chuckled at her excitement before placing some hair product into my hands and massaged it into her scalp. I absolutely love her hair. I've made sure to take very good care of her hair since she was born.
I quickly braided her hair into two french braids and hurried her to get her things ready for her first day of school. I can't believe she's already going to school. So many different emotions are fighting their way to the surface right now. It still feels like it was a week ago when I first held her in my arms and heard the sound of her cries. It still baffles me how a small tiny human can scream so loud. My motherly instinct instantly kicked in to calm her down the moment they laid her onto my chest.
If only he was there to see her.
To see similar eyes as his, looking back at him.
To hold her for the first time
If only he was here.
" I'm ready!" she shouted running down the hall with her backpack on her back. I grabbed her lunch that I prepared earlier and placed it into her backpack. I looked at the time and realized we only had 40 minutes left before her school starts. We made our way out of the apartment and walked towards the car while digging through my purse for the key. My eyes landed on my phone when I realized I hadn't taken any pictures of Alia's first day at school.
" Stop!" I shouted a little too loud before coming to a halt. "Is everything ok mama?" she asked, looking confused and worried all at once.
" We forgot to take pictures before leaving home." I turned and said to her quietly with a sad expression. " We can take them now. We still have time." she said with a cheery smile.
"You're right but we need to do it fast. Preschool starts in less than 40 minutes and I don't want you to be late on your first day."
5 minutes later
We're 10 minutes away from the school and I'm the one who's more nervous than her. What if she starts crying or she doesn't want to stay.
" Are you excited ?" I asked nervously as my grip on the steering wheel tightened.
"I am but i'm also scared" she mumbled as she nervously plays with her hands. Dammit, I'm making her nervous. "Why are you scared baby? I asked worriedly. The view of toddlers and children coming into view as we drove closer to the school.
" What if I make any friends or they are mean? Are the teachers going to be mean? She asked frantically as tears pooled at the corner of her eyes.
"Ok well first thing we're going to do is to take some deep breaths ok. No, the teachers aren't going to be mean and as for making friends im sure you won't have any problems making friends. Anyone would be glad to be your friend. You might not make any friends on the first day and that's ok. Making friends is really hard especially since most of the other kids are just as nervous as you are. They're probably having this same conversation with their parents right now just like we are. They are going to be some mean kids every now and then but that's ok. That's just how the world works. There are nice people and they are mean people. Remember to always tell your teacher or me if anyone is being mean or making you uncomfortable ok." I assured her.
She gently nodded before turning her gaze to the parents who got out of their vehicle with their child. We finally arrived at the preschool and parked a short distance away from the entrance.
"Ready?" I asked, still worried she might not want to enter the building.
A slow smile made its way onto her face as she nodded yes. I brought her closer, placing a kiss onto her forehead before removing her seat belt and grabbing her bag.
With her hand intertwined with mine, we made our way into the building. Parents and kids were all over the place. Kids were crying and screaming, some wouldn't even let go of their parents while some of them sat quietly in a corner.
We finally reached her class. Her teacher met us at the door and introduced herself as Mrs Smith. I introduced myself and Alia Soon after. She was an older lady who looked to be around sixty. She had pale skin and a cheerful voice. Her eyes were the prettiest shade of brown I've ever seen. I'm sure Alia is going to love her. I stooped down in front of her one last time before leaving to give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
" Remember what I said in the car. Everything's going to be ok. I love you. " I said before going in for a second hug. " I love you too mama" she mumbled against my shoulders.
Her teacher then ushered her into the classroom and showed her to a seat next to a pretty girl with pigtails and glasses. The little girl smiled at her to which she too responded with a smile.
Maybe it won't be a bad day for her after all.
I then made my way out of the school compound and to Old Joes to see Neha. Hopefully it won't be a bad day for me either.
