Chapter 2: Cookies

ANAYA'S POV

  The smell of caffeine and donuts instantly hits my nostrils the moment I push the glass door open. Nothing smells better than freshly made donuts covered in chocolate. I made my way to the counter and ordered myself two chocolate donuts and two iced coffee.
  I then found an empty seat behind an elderly couple and began eating my donuts as I waited for Neha. It’s now 9:15 and still no sign from her. Of Course she’s going to be late or should I say it as she says, “fashionably late”.

On que, the door of the cafe opened revealing the one and only Neha. She spotted me instantly and quickly made her way over ignoring the numerous gazes from the men in the room. I stood up as she got closer before enveloping her into a tight hug. I haven't seen her in a while. We've both been busy with our own life but we always try to spend some time together.
  “I've missed you” she spoke just before pulling away from the hug. “I've missed you too.” I responded as I made my way back to where I previously sat.

“Also i got you coffee and a donut”  placing both of the items in front of her.
“ Oh no girl, I'll just have the coffee. I've been trying to eat healthier and I know the moment I put that donut in my mouth, I'll order 6 more to go. You have it” she said before pushing the donut towards me. “You don't need to tell me twice,” I mumbled before grabbing the donut and taking a bite from it.
    Neha and I are completely opposites. She was the fun and outspoken kid in class while I was more of an introverted and shy kid. Her fair complexion made the shade of her brown pupils stand out along with her confidence. She's truly beautiful and I'm lucky to have her by my side. I still don't know how I managed to trap her into being my best friend but I'm glad I did.

“How’s my tiny human? Was she excited for her first day?” she questioned as she took a huge gulp of her coffee. “She was but she was also a bit nervous. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that she's already started school.” I mumbled through the donut. I hope she’s doing well right now. “ Me too. It still feels like it was yesterday when she finally popped into the real world. It's funny how time flies.” she muttered quietly, reminiscing about the past.

“ Ok let's get to the reason why i'm actually here” Have you figured out what you're going to wear yet? She asked shortly after setting her coffee aside and straightening her posture.
“What are you talking about? I was confused.
" Don't tell me you already forgot?" She sat back and folded her arms with disappointment and disbelief.

  " We planned to have a girls night out tomorrow since it's your birthday"
Shit. I forgot everything about that. As much as I want to ditch our night out I can't do it for the third time. Plus it's been a while since I've gone out. Maybe a little putting for a few hours won't hurt.

"Oh right sorry" I laughed it off. " I haven't chosen anything yet but I will when I get home. I actually should be going right now. I need to find a babysitter for the night too" I said as I quickly gathered my things still seated.
"Oh don't you worry about that. I have a friend who has a sister. She babysits, I'm sure she won't mind staying with Alia." She said as she slowly got up from her seat. I too got up from my seat and we began heading out of the cafe.

  "I'll give her a call and I'll let you know later. " She says before heading in the direction where her car was parked.
  "Thanks. I'll see you later!" I yelled back. I turned and made my way to my car which wasn't too far from where I was standing.

    "Make sure to pick something sexy!" She shouted with a mischievous smile before driving away.

  A smile made its way to my lips as I shaked my head at her playfulness before entering my car and began to drive.

  The day went by smoothly and quietly. Too quietly. I had finished work early and decided to do some cleaning up. I looked at the clock to see it was nearing time for Alia's school to be over. I quickly hopped into the shower and got ready to go pick her up. I can't wait to hear all about her day. I hope it went well.

   I locked up and made my way to the car. I couldn't help but notice an unfamiliar black SUV parked not too far from my car. Perhaps someone new moved into the building. I ignored the parked car and got into my car and made my way to the school. On my way there I made a stop at Cookie crumbl and ordered our favorite cookies. Part of the reason why I got cookies was to be safe, just in case her first day didn't go as well as I thought it would, and the other part was if it did go well then I think we both should celebrate her first day together. Can't go wrong with cookies.

I parked my car and headed towards the school. The bell should ring any moment now. As I got closer I got a notification from Neha.
 
    NEHA

  I talked to my friend's sister and she agreed to babysit Alia.

Picking u up at 8. Be ready xx.

Anaya:

      Got it! xx.

The bell went off and the sound of children's voices began to grow louder. Parents began entering the building and I too followed behind. I made my way to Alia's classroom and was surprised to see her still seated and laughing with her classmate, the pretty girl with the pigtails and glasses. She quickly spotted me and excitedly signed me to enter the classroom.

  "Mama this is Emily. She's my friend" she says excitedly. The little girl turned and looked at me with the sweetest smile. I stoop down to her height before introducing myself.
  "Hello Emily, My name is Anaya. You are very pretty" I said softly with a smile. She looked down shyly at my comment before muttering a quiet thank you.
  " You too are very pretty," she whispers with a smile.
  "Aren't you the cutest?" I chuckled at her politeness.

   I turned my attention back to Alia to see her smiling at our interaction.
  "Are you ready to go?" I asked smiling
She nodded and began packing her things. She then waved goodbye to Emily and began walking ahead of me.

   "Goodbye Emily" I spoke to the little girl before following Alia.

  The classroom was packed with parents and kids. I grabbed Alia's hand to make sure she's ok.
  "Do you have everything baby? '' I asked over the noise in the classroom.
  "Yes ma" she responded with a smile.

    "Daddy!" The little girl, Emily shouted from behind. I turned around to see a large man with broad shoulders pick the little girl up. His back was faced towards me so I didn't get to see his face but I can definitely tell he loves the gym. I drew my attention back to Alia and guided ourselves out of the school.

  "I got you a surprise" I whispered mischievously as we made our way to the car. The word surprised alone had Alia jumping up and down in the middle of the parking lot.
   "What is it, what is it?" she kept asking, clearly excited.
  "It's in the car but first you have to close your eyes."
She quickly shut her eyes and I slowly guided her to the car. I opened the door and placed her onto the seat and then put her seatbelt on.
  "No peeking" I shouted before closing the door and hurriedly made my way to the other side.

   " Ok are you ready?" I asked just as excited as her.
  "Yes!" She shouted beaming.
"Ok open now" I commanded. Her eyes lit up at the sight of the cookies.

   "Cookies!" She shouted excitedly, bouncing up and down in her seat.
   She quickly opened the box and reached for the first cookie. She took a big bite of her cookie with the biggest smile.

   "How about we finish those cookies at the park and you tell me all about your day?" I asked as I began to start the car.
  " Okay!"  She shouted with a mouthful of cookies.
