I didn't want to think about my parents, barely even dream of the horror. My prayers were answered by the complaining of an elder woman.
"What are you doing? Wake up you parentless brats!" commands Mrs. Victoria Albrect, the caretaker of the orphanage, "Eleanor, it's your day! I do not care what you're doing, go take the little ones down to get dressed!" I sprung out of my bed as quickly as possible to raise my hand.
Mrs. V Albrect scoffed, clearly annoyed, "What now Esther? What now boy?"
"May I help my sister with the little ones?" I questioned as politely as I could.
"Run off down, I couldn't care less." So that's what I did! Running through the main hall of the orphanage I chuckled. I quickly slid down the stairs. I accidentally bumped into a nurse holding someone. Right when I got down all the steps I spotted Eleanor, who also spotted me. So I tiptoed over to her.
"Need help?" I teased Eleanor, who clearly was struggling dressing the kids up.
"Obviously!" she shouted in panic, trying to get a skirt on a little girl. I started to help by putting on pants on the little boys.
A few minutes later all the children were dressed, along with Eleanor and I. We slowly crept up the stairs with the littles behind us. Patiently waiting in the hallway we awaited our inspection. The cold walls of the hallway sent shivers down my spine. This orphanage was never comforting, and it never will be. Before long the woman inspecting us was the same woman who told me my parents were dead, Madam Leticia. She was in charge of this horrid place.
"All children groomed and dressed Madam," I reported, bowing in respect. Keeping my head down
"Thank you, you are excused," she commanded harshly while moving the little kids to the next room. I grabbed my sister's hand, both of us ready to take off downstairs.
"Where are you going Eleanor?" Madam Leticia questioned.
"Downstairs madam?" she replied confused.
"Who said you were excused? I only excused your brother"
"Not to be rude madam, but why am I not excused?"
"You are being adopted." I shook my head in shock, excited.
"Does that mean I'm getting adopted too?" I questioned, practically squealing at the top of my lungs.
"No, you aren't," Madam Leticia said glaring at me with a mean cruel smile. I held Eleanor's hand tighter out of anger. Giving a cold stare right back at her. Scoffing, she looked at our hands intertwined.
"I know you love your sister and all but let go of her hand, Esther, let go," she growled at me. I stood tall and still as stone, trying to intimidate her while small tears formed in my eyes.
"Let go of her Esther you forsaken devil child!" Madam Leticia screamed with anger. She slapped me across the face so rough I spat out a tiny puddle of blood. Staring at the tiny mess on the floor I let go of Eleanor's hand.
"You know what? Neither of you deserve to be happy! Esther, go to bed and Eleanor follow me. Now," she commanded, raging with anger. I followed her command, slowly stepping down the stairs, still staring at my dear sister. She kept her eyes on me, mouthing, "I will come back, do not worry." I finally saw her leave with Madam Letitica. I fled down the stairs sprinting to the sleeping chambers.
