Continued from last chapter
Jack Manifold had just stepped out of a local coffee shop when he heard someone yell his name. He turned around to see a man, who he vaguely recognized as someone from the internet, hurrying towards him with a camera in hand. Jack didn't feel like talking to anyone at the moment, but he put on a polite smile and braced himself for whatever the man had in mind.
The man stopped in front of him, a microphone now in his hand. "So, Jack," he said, his camera pointed directly at him. "How does it feel to be a sick murderer?"
Jack felt as if he'd been punched in the stomach. His face went pale, and he could feel his hands start to shake. He wanted to yell, to lash out at this man, but he knew it wouldn't do any good. He took a deep breath and forced himself to stay calm.
"I didn't murder anyone," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "It was an accident."
But the man wasn't satisfied with that answer. "Oh, come on," he sneered. "We all know what really happened. You killed him, and you should be in jail."
Jack felt a wave of rage wash over him, but he forced himself to stay calm. He didn't owe this man anything, and he didn't have to explain himself to him.
He took another deep breath, then turned and walked away, trying to ignore the man's taunts as he went. But even as he walked away, he could feel the weight of the man's words bearing down on him. He knew that there would be others like this man, who would judge him and condemn him without ever trying to understand his side of the story.
It was a harsh reminder of how much his life had changed, and how much he would always carry the burden of what had happened.
Jack Manifold was shaken up from the encounter with the man who called him a murderer. He was walking down the street, lost in his thoughts when he heard a small voice calling out to him.
"Hey mister, are you a murderer?"
Jack looked down to see a little boy, no older than six or seven, staring up at him with wide eyes. Jack's heart sank, knowing that the boy had overheard the conversation he had just had with the man.
"No, no I'm not," Jack said, his voice gentle. "What makes you think that?"
The boy pointed to the camera that the man had been holding. "The man with the camera said you were a murderer. He said you should be in jail."
Jack's heart broke at the innocence of the child's question. He didn't want to lie, but he also didn't want to scare the child with the truth. He knelt down to be at eye level with the boy and spoke to him softly.
"Sometimes, people say things that aren't true, or they don't understand the whole story. I didn't hurt anyone on purpose, it was an accident. But accidents can still have bad consequences."
The boy looked at him thoughtfully for a moment before nodding his head. "I understand. I won't tell anyone you're a murderer if you're not. I don't like it when people say mean things."
Jack felt a small smile tug at the corners of his lips. "Thank you, I appreciate that. You're a good kid."
The boy smiled brightly before running off to rejoin his family. Jack stood back up and continued on his way, feeling a little lighter. It was a small interaction, but it gave him hope that not everyone would judge him without understanding the full story.
Four days later
Jack Manifold's heart sank as he watched the video on his phone. It was the footage from the encounter with the man who had called him a murderer, and it had been posted on the internet for all to see.
