EXCRUCIATING PAIN II
Living in the darkness
I was ready to fight against whoever was intending to come closer to the battle field where we were. It didn’t matter who it was, except the fact that I would never let anybody else to hurt her ever again. That was a promise that I made in that awful night. What I didn’t know was that she wasn’t asleep, she was simply gone, but it took me a while to finally understand it.
I could tell that the carriage was coming in my direction, so I kept my ground in a defensive stance, ready to violently kill them all.
Annabelle… I thought just as soon as the noises came closer.
She was everything I ever had and I liked to watch her sleep more than anything in the world, but despite that fascination I had for her, her safety was even more important than anything else.
After a few more minutes, the carriage stopped in front of us, revealing two dark silhouettes, which I instantly recognized as Anna and Dustin, our little brother.
“Shaan, what the hell…?” Anna began to ask, but stopped as soon as she saw Annabelle in my arms. Her eyes widen in horror as soon as she saw the entire disaster surrounding us. She scanned the landscape taking in the entire battle field as she probably quickly realized what happened.
Dustin followed her, his eyes widening in shock and disbelief as well as hers.
“Annabelle…” Anna whispered, her gaze never leaving her.
“She’s…dead…” Dustin whispered in utter undeniable pain. His voice was a strange mix of despair and unbelievable sorrow.
“Anna, she’s dead!” he screamed, breaking the silence of the beautiful nocturnal landscape, forcing a few crows to abandon their tasty human flesh scattered all around the ground. He tried to move closer to us while raising his hand in order to touch her pale white face. That simple action made me almost instantly react as my lips almost instantly released a loud growl.
“Do not touch her!” I screamed, completely disturbing the silence of the night. Dustin’s mouth was open as he made a step back trembling in fear.
Good… you should be afraid… I told to myself satisfied that I didn’t let him get closer to her.
“Shaan?” Anna whispered in confusion as she analyzed my reactions as an evil smile played on my lips.
“What do you mean ‘she’s dead’?” I asked them smirking.
“She’s just sleeping…” I said, trying to make them understand that she was definitely not dead.
After all it has been such a long trip… It was something perfectly normal for a human girl like her to be tired and to want to rest for a while.
“Shaan, what are you talking about? She’s not breathing… She’s… gone…” Anna whispered while big salty tears of crimson blood were quickly rolling down on her cheeks.
“She’s not dead. Stop saying that!” I screamed in fury, shaking the big oak trees from their roots.
Anna’s face instantly changed as soon as she heard my words.
“Shaan?” she whispered, seeming even more shaken by the entire situation.
Dustin’s mouth was hanging open in surprise of seeing us like that, but it was an expression I couldn’t quite understand. I didn’t know why they were so sad. After all we were safe and I managed to kill all the hunters.
We should be happy after all, wasn’t it so?
“No, she’s not dead, she’s just sleeping. After all is only natural for a human girl like her to sleep during the night…” I repeated and proudly looked towards Annabelle who seemed so peaceful in her long dreamless sleep.
