It has been 4 days since Serendipity won first place on the battle of the bands. It was a very nice experience even though we are not officially a band. We only formed the group a week before the competition to help our friend Cameron on his financial troubles as of the moment. The contest has a $5,000 cash prize, so my best friend Skye and her cousin John asked me to create Serendipity with them alongside Cameron. With that amount of money given, Cameron has paid half of his father's debt from a loan shark who has been harassing their family for weeks.
Posh, the bar where we are doing gigs every weekends from 8:30 to 9:00 in the evening, is owned by John's uncle who agreed to hire us as part-timers. He only accepts singers ages 18 and above, but he made an exception for us after hearing our bassist's story.
Today is a nice, humid Friday afternoon and my mom recommended me to a friend of hers who was looking for someone to babysit her 7-year-old son on such a short notice.
❝Mrs. Irwin? Yoo hoo! I'm here.❞ I called, ringing the doorbell twice and hugging the penny board close to my chest.
Not even a minute later, the white door opened, revealing a beautiful woman. She has shoulder-length blonde hair, light blue eyes and a very nice complexion. Mom told me that Mrs. Irwin has 3 kids already and the eldest is a year older than Mikey and I. Huh. That must be a lie because the woman looks so young!
❝Hello there. You must be Alexis. Am I correct?❞ she said, giving me a warm smile.
❝That's right. It's great to meet you.❞ I replied politely, returning her smile.
❝Oh, please come in.❞ she instructed, opening the door wider. ❝This is Harry, the one you will be babysitting and this is my daughter Lauren.❞
❝Hiya, super lovely little humans! My name is Alexis.❞ I greeted, giving each of them a hug which they responded with a timid smile.
Why are kids so cute?!
❝Harry is a bit sluggish today because of a slight fever. I cannot bring him with me to my daughter's ballet recital so he can have loads of rest. My eldest son will be home in an hour or two, so you can leave after. He will be giving you the payment.❞ Mrs. Irwin chuckled at my introduction, pushing her cute son close to me.
Mrs. Irwin gave me her contact number in case something happens and gave me a short tour around their cozy house before bidding us goodbye.
❝Roger that. Have fun at the recital!❞ I saluted at her and her daughter, slinging an arm over the little boy's slim shoulders as we watch them get in their car and drive away.
❝I'm hungry.❞ Harry said, tugging on my shirt's sleeve.
❝I thought your name was Harry? Alrighty, then. What do you want to eat, hungry?❞ I teased, earning a laugh from the kid.
❝I don't know what I want. Can you cook me something?❞ he asked, looking up at me.
❝Hmm.. Sure, cutie. Do you perhaps like vegemite?❞ I asked, holding his hand and walking to the kitchen.
❝Yeah, I do. Why? Please don't tell me you'll be making me a sandwich. I had toasted bread with vegemite spread with my brother for breakfast.❞ he said, sitting on a stool across from me as I pull out ingredients that I will be using.
❝Pardon me for snooping in your fridge and pantry. A sandwich? No, not really. I'm thinking of baking some tasty cheese and vegemite scrolls especially for you. Have you had one before?❞ I said, mixing some flour, salt, butter and milk in a bowl.
