A/N: I'm taking you all the way to Phoenix, Arizona. Have a nice stay!

IV - Pitch Black

"We'll leave at dawn. I just realized, night is no goodie. Where are you going anyway?" Alex asked, the irritation towards each other decreased a bit. Ailey didn't answer immediately, she was there by the window, observing the lights, carefully sensing the sound around them. Have they stopped searching for me? Surely, I'm not the only one who's ever escaped right?

She sighed. "Fresno. I'm somewhere in Phoenix right?" She turned to face Alex who's sitting on the couch, cleaning his nails. She managed to not roll her eyes and show that she's still somehow off with this guy.

"Your brother's in Fresno? How'd you know you're in Phoenix? And the question I really wanna ask is where'd those guys take you?" He dropped his hands on his lap and tapped it, he eyed her with a frown eyebrow while the other eyebrow was raised upward.

She sighed and tried to remember. "In a museum, I think. I saw the label of the building. It doesn't look like a museum anymore. They took the whole area, and that place is cool.. Strangely cool." She remembered the high technology style of the place, the gadgets and the tracking devices they used to connect it to the computer. "They had 3 large TVs. Like, a really wide google map street view."

Alex looked stunned, "then we're--"

"Had. I said had cause I smashed them." She cut him. "But let's not be relieved, maybe there are still more devices in there. That's why we really need to get out of Phoenix. They took me when I was on my way home in Merced after I left Evan."

The last words that she let out stung her. But she shook off the worry, though it didn't do any better. Rather than her feeling better, she felt as if she was carrying boxes, and it just keeps on adding loads. "You? How'd you make it hiding here while the whole town's in ruins?"

His eyes moved from the floor up to her. The window was in front of him as the sunlight reflected through the glass, making his brown eyes appear lighter. "I live here. Before you came, I'd already decided to go to a safe place, like, Ontario or somewhere in Britain. But you can't fly from here. Airports are all blocked, no one gets in or out. Except by land."

Ailey slightly shook her head by the thought. What in the world is happening to the world itself? She held her lips as the quizzical feeling submerged her.

Alex cleared his throat and stood up. "You don't think the ones who took you are the same as those people who took your parents?"

She frowned and went through it inch by inch, remembering yesterday.

They wanna eradicate the world...
Removing the old generation.
Leaving the new.
Us.

The young girls, the young guy she knocked out, Shiran who's also just around her age, the latest devices. "No. They wouldn't be there. They're not there."

The answer she gave seemed to clear their ways, but more than that, it just makes the questions wider. As to why are they collecting the young ones. Where are the old generations? Who took them? Who started this madness? It can almost drive anyone crazy.

Alex walked past her, but before going upstairs he told her, "I'm going to sleep. You guard first, then at night you sleep and I'll guard. We'll go at 3 am."

-

Instead of sleeping, he sat by the window and watched. It was winter, and that was when almost all the houses are hosting parties. Winter was the perfect season, sun's up and shining, yet the ground is frosting. "Never thought you'd be this empty." He said to the place itself.

Hours later, he heard Ailey's noises; the zipping of bags, creaking of the cupboard, clanging of cans. Alex's lips curved, packing really is a girl's thing. She sure feels at home. He didn't mind her though. As long as she's not the type of girl who always needs a hero.

He heard stomps getting closer, "hey Alex are you awake? Oh you are--" He wondered what made her stop, so he looked to where she's looking. He smiled when he saw it.

By the window was the winter sunset. Arizona's pride. It radiated pink and purple mixing through the darkening sky. Winter was never boring in here, never just the dull white, grey and blue.

"I didn't knew sun could set with those colours.. Very lovely.." Her blue eyes were almost hypnotized with the view, then it moved from there to Alex who's standing beside the window. She raised an eyebrow.

Alex smirked and shook his head then he walked towards the door. "You can sleep now. I'll guard." Then he left her. She watched the sun gradually hiding as the darkness replaced it after an hour.

She hated the dark now, it makes her think of the things that happened. And thinking of how hard her situation is makes her feel hopeless. She bit her lip, suppressing her tears. You're stronger than you can ever be Ailey, stronger than this. She convinced herself as the one drop of tear fell.

Then she decided to doze off.

-

After a couple of hours, she woke up and shivered. She picked up the grey coat that she found in the dresser and pledged to return it when things go back to normal. When things go back to normal, huh?

"Cheer up you pessimistic girl." She whispered to herself.

She took the backpack that contained the stuffs they need and went down but as she was going down the stairs, she saw that whole place was dark and you could only see the shadows.

She felt her heart beat from normal to a beat with an absolute haste.

"A-alex?" She whispered and roamed her eyes around until someone pulled her and in a matter of seconds before she could even react, she was lifted up in the air without any noise.

Then she could see nothing anymore, just pitch black darkness.
