Izuku blinked his eyes open as he lay on the concrete, raindrops splattering against his face. The gray clouds above had light filtering through, shining directly into his eyes. He wished to close his eyes and go back to sleep, but was startled as he heard footsteps approaching. Heroes Kamui Woods, Deatharms, and Backdraft stared down at him. He didn't expect praise, but neither did he expect the scolding that flooded his ears.
The three told him that what he did was most definitely dangerous. He understood that, but was the scolding that necessary? He was exhausted from the previous encounter with the sludge monster, so as soon as the trio stopped scolding him and walked towards Kacchan, he left. Izuku's footsteps echoed down the alleyways as he began to walk home. The rain had cleared, and sunlight shone clearly through the clouds once again. Thinking and muttering to himself, he soon realized that All Might's punch, the one that knocked him unconscious, was the catalyst that changed the weather. The true power of the number one hero, he assumed.
None of this mattered now. He was walking home a failure. He had tried to save Kacchan with all of his might, but of course All Might, with his flashy quirk, had to one-up his childish attempts. It just had to be straight after he crushed the child's dreams. The words All Might had said, seconds before Izuku passed out, seemed like a trick of the mind. All Might would've rather gone to the public than comforted the children he'd saved. Izuku grew bitter. He chewed on his lip. and decided to brush past the stupid details.
He had other things to worry about then his past. Looking down at the ground, job options floated around in his brain until he heard a voice go, "Psst! Hey Midoriya!" From beside him.
Startled, he looked up. He saw the familiar purple skin and smile of Petrona looking back at him. "Petrona! Other beings above! Don't scare me like that!" He gasped loudly.
"Woah, chill! Breathe, Midoriya! In, Out, In-,"
"I know how to breathe Petrona." Brushing the imaginary dust from his shoulder as he stared at the poltergeist. In the dim alleyway, she seemed to glow, although it was faint.
"That's good, 'cause I've kinda forgotten how to. " She chirped. She then nonchalantly scratched the back of her neck, earning a sigh from the green-haired teen.
"Well, did you see my failed attempts at facing my past?" Izuku asked. Almost praying she hadn't.
"That wasn't a failure. I think you did your best." She nodded slowly. Still smiling, not showing her teeth as usual.
"Well, clearly my best wasn't good enough." He mumbled, continuing, "Ugh, I'm so stupid! Why did I think that would work?"
"Well you still did what I asked of you." Petrona responded, tilting her head. "And with that Midoriya, you are already on your first steps to becoming a hero."
Izuku froze, he had heard her say something along those lines when they had first met. But those words, they didn't feel the same anymore. Especially because of all the words of discouragement that had been said throughout the day, including the years prior.
