That One Day

Memories brought back

It was finally Saturday. What happened yesterday? I remember I asked Mei if she wanted to stay over. Did she say yes..?

Thinking in my mind while half asleep.

"Geh!" I shivered feeling my spines go crazy.
Who touched me?

"MEI!?" I scream and fall off the bed.

Mei was sleeping on me. Her pajamas were so cute... Her face is so cute. I was blushing so hard right now, I was as red as a tomato.

"Ah, sorry," I whisper to myself. "I must have distracted her while she was sleeping..."

"R-R-Ryo!" She squeaks and jumps up, "Sorry... To cause you trouble and stay. I...I didn't feel comfortable sleeping on your bed alone, and I thought you might be cold, so I set you here..." Mei politely explained and yawned.

"E-EH?!" I blush. "You carried me up here?" I pat her head. "Thank you for caring about me." I smiled.

"Take your time, Mei! I'll get breakfast ready..." Closing my eyes so I wouldn't blush.

"Ah, sure, Ryo! Thanks, I'll help if you need. Call me down." She clasps her hands together cutely.

(Mei's point of view.)
Ryo Inaba, huh. I like Ryo... He has a good heart... I can just read his mind. I've never felt... this way about someone. I have never experienced a love so true." I chuckle softly.

"Mei! Breakfast is ready!" I shout.

"A-ah right! I'll be down there!" Mei replies. "Uwoaa, amazing Ryo! I never knew you could cook!" Mei smiles.

"Haha! My uncle teaches me. Oh yeah, talk about it, you've never met him right?" I ask.

"Y-yes, I'm sure he's a wonderful person!" She holds her hands.

"Haha, he is!" I say.

"Nee, Mei. I was wondering... Do you have powers?" I unexpectedly ask.

"I do."

That's all she says. Maybe I shouldn't ask... I was so curious though. But did I offend her, did I bother her... was it something she didn't like to talk about..? I felt bad.

"Hm, Ryo? You look in doubt." She smiled.

"Pft, nah. Let's eat!" I smile at her.

It's so awkward. It's almost like I can't be myself in front of Mei, my mind is focused on her. I don't have time to think about myself.

Mei nods. Almost as if she's reading my mind and agrees with me. How strange...

She points to a photo after finishing breakfast.

"If you don't mind me saying, Ryo," she tilts her head and smiles, "this is a lovely photo of you and your family."

A tear drops down her face.

I didn't have time to say thank you. Instead I ran to Mei.

"Mei! What's wrong?" I put my arms around her.

"Nothing. It's just... I've never grew up knowing my parents..." She holds back tears.

I hug her. "My mother passed away... And it's okay Mei, because I have you and you have me... That's why... You shouldn't cry."

Her eyes wide. Blushing. It's the first time I've seen her blush. I hide my face from blushing...

"I won't cry anymore... I can't cry. This soul of mines won't let someone so strong cry." She gets up.

Her eyes changed to a milky white. Flashbacks... These were the stories of Mei Sakurai. The legendary Mei... Amazing, I remember stories my grandfather telling me how powerful she was and how beautiful. She was no monster.

"You're right... I am the one, the "legendary" Mei Sakurai..."

"Y-you read my mind?!" I ask so shocked.

"Yes...I'm sorry. Are you afraid of me?" She asks unwillingly.

"No! I'm not, Mei!" I say proudly.

She smiles with twinkling eyes and reaches her hand out for mines.

Everything goes blank. As I grab a hold of her hand. Her hands were soft like an angel's.

(Flashback)

There I was playing with the other kids. Mei, sitting on the swings. How old was she... She looked about 4... Same age I was back then. How cute...

"Hey! I shout (Flashback, Ryo's younger self) Do you want to play with us?" I ask while holding up a peace sign and smiling.

"M-me... Play with you guys..?" Mei asked.

"Mmhm! We are playing tag! It's fun!" I say.

"S-sure!" She sniffles and moves her hair out of her face.

"Ne! What's your name?" I ask.

"Mei! Yours?" Mei politely asks.

"Nehee, Ryo! Nice to meet ya', Mei!"

There it ends. Gah, ended there. But I feel as time goes by I slowly learn more about myself, most importantly I get to know more about Mei.

Maybe we were destined to be together... Is she my soulmate? I need to get this feeling through though. Mei... You're the one who was there for me, I was the one who wanted to be your friend. Did you like me? Because I did. You were sitting there all alone... Such lovely hair flowing within the spring air. I'm glad I came up to you that one day. Even if it was just for a moment. I still thought about you everyday, though you left. You never left my heart... Because it was you who made me feel this way.

"Mei!"

"Hmm?" She smiles a faint but lovely smile.

"I love you."
