Chapter 5: Announcing The News

Katai showed up at Kunikida's house promptly after hanging out with Sigma. He knocked on the door.

Kunikida got up to answer it. "Hey, Katai."

Katai was grinning from ear to ear. "Hi!"

"Something good must've happened. Want to come in and tell me?"

"Yes!" Katai walked in and sat on the couch.

Kunikida sat next to him.

Katai turned to Kunikida with a huge grin. "I talked to Sigma like you suggested, and guess what?"

"What?" Kunikida asked.

Katai's smile got bigger. "We exchanged numbers!"

Kunikida smiled. "That's great!"

"Yeah!"

Kunikida high-fived his best friend. "I knew you could do it."

Katai returned the high-five. "Thanks."

"You're welcome."

"I'm still not a hundred percent sure where we'll go from here, but I consider it a win since I got his number."

"It's for sure a win."

"I don't know if I should try asking him out-I mean asking if he wants to hang out-or if I should wait for him to ask me."

"It's up to you, and it could end up going either way. Maybe you'll both end up asking that. And you definitely meant 'asking him out'."

"I did not!"

Kunikida grinned. "Sure you didn't."

Katai pouted. "Yeah! Take my word for it."

"I won't be doing that."

"You're so mean."

"No, I'm merely just stating what I see."

"...Alright, fine."

"In all seriousness, I'd just think it over for now and then come to a decision from there. Maybe you'll end up texting him first, or maybe it'll be the other way around."

"Good idea. Thanks, Kunikida."

"Anytime, Katai."

Katai was still visibly thrilled about this amazing turn of events. He couldn't believe he'd actually managed to get someone's number. It made him feel like things were looking up after his last experience. It wasn't an exaggeration to say that he'd been unlucky in love back then. But now things could be different. Now he could hopefully start seeing Sigma.

Meanwhile, Sigma was doing the same thing as Katai: announcing the news to his friends.

"You look excited," Fyodor remarked.

"I AM!!!!!" Sigma exclaimed.

Nikolai laughed. "Care to share the news?"

Sigma grinned. "Katai and I exchanged numbers!"

Fyodor and Nikolai clapped.

"Nice job," Fyodor said.

"Yeah!" Nikolai agreed.

"Thanks," Sigma replied.

"You should message him," Fyodor suggested.

"And say what?" Sigma asked.

"I don't know. Ask him if he wants to hang out or something."

"...Oh my gosh, I'd be asking him out."

"Exactly!"

"I don't know if I'm ready to do that."

"Why not?" Nikolai asked.

"Because...what if I'd be coming off too strong too soon?" Sigma worried.

"I mean, he sounded pretty eager to get your number. So I doubt you should worry about that."

"I guess that's true."

"You could always wait to see if he'll text you first, but hey, nothing wrong with making the first move."

Sigma thought about it. Despite how crazy Nikolai was, he had made some pretty good points. Maybe this didn't need to be as complications as he was making it out to be. Maybe it could be simple if he didn't stress over it too much.

Later that night, Katai and Sigma were both getting ready for bed. Unsurprisingly, they'd both been stressing about what to do and debating if they should text first or wait for a text.

Finally, Katai decided to bite the bullet and do it. After settling into bed, he pulled out his phone and texted Sigma "hey, do you want to do something sometime?"

Sigma's phone buzzed and he glanced at it, reading the text. He began to feel happier than he ever thought he would after receiving a text.

Sigma: Yes, for sure! What do you want to do and when?

Katai: I was thinking maybe we could go out for ice cream tomorrow if you're free

Sigma: Sounds good! The place nearby?

Katai: yep!

Sigma: Perfect. What time?

Katai: would 3:30 work?

Sigma: It sure would! See you then?

Katai: yeah, I'll look forward to it

Sigma: Same here

Katai: goodnight

Sigma: Goodnight :)

The two of them turned their phones off and tried to go to sleep. But as a result of the conversation they'd just had over text, they were both too excited to sleep.

Katai was shocked at his own boldness but also glad Sigma had said yes. Otherwise, he might've died of embarrassment.

As for Sigma, he was thrilled that he was going out with Katai tomorrow. The next day couldn't come soon enough.
