Alex sat at his desk, his eyes fixed on the screen. He had been working nonstop, trying to meet a deadline that his boss, Nancy, had set. He could hear the sound of heels clicking down the hallway, getting louder and louder. Before he could turn around, two of his female coworkers - Amelia and Grace, as well as his boss Nancy - entered his office without knocking.
They stood in front of him, arms crossed, their expressions serious.
"Alex, we need to talk to you about something important," said Grace, the team lead.
Alex felt his stomach drop. The tone of their voices indicated that this was not going to be a pleasant conversation.
"What is it?" he asked, trying to sound calm.
"We've been discussing the marketing strategy for our company," said Amelia, "and we've come up with an idea that we think could work."
Nancy jumped in, "We think it would be a good idea if you started dressing and acting like a woman, at least at work."
Alex's eyebrows furrowed. He wasn't sure if he had heard them correctly.
"What do you mean, 'dressing and acting like a woman'?" he asked, confused.
Nancy sighed, "We mean wearing women's clothing, putting on makeup, and using a more feminine tone of voice."
Alex was stunned. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"Why do you need me to do this?" he asked, hoping there was some reasonable explanation for this absurd request.
Grace explained, "Our research shows that our clients respond better to female representatives. We need to close more deals as the company goes through this hard time, and we believe that having you present yourself as a woman will help us do that."
Alex knew that he was not comfortable with the idea of living life as a woman. He was a man, and he was comfortable in his own skin.
"I'm sorry, but I can't do that," he said firmly.
"Alex, you don't understand," said Nancy, "This is important for the success of the company. We can't afford to lose customers because we didn't take advantage of this opportunity."
Grace joined in, "And besides, we know about your financial situation. You're in debt, and you're on the brink of losing everything. We don't want that to happen, do we?"
Alex felt like he was trapped. He didn't want to lose his job, but the idea of living life as a woman was repulsive to him. He knew he needed to think of a way out of this situation.
Alex took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. He knew that he had to negotiate with his coworkers if he wanted to find a solution that worked for everyone.
"I can't just change who I am overnight," he said, "I need time to think about this."
"Of course, we understand," said Amelia. "We'll give you a month to slowly adjust. We can help you with makeup and clothing, and we'll make sure that you feel comfortable."
Alex wasn't thrilled about the idea of taking a month to "adjust", but he knew that he had to play along. He couldn't afford to lose his job or his financial stability. He agreed in the moment but didn't plan on following through. Besides, they can't actually be serious.
On the morning of his first day of "adjustment", Alex felt sick to his stomach. He didn't want to go to work and face his colleagues as someone he wasn't. But he had no choice. He had to comply.
