Over the next few weeks, Alex began his "adjustment" phase, as per his coworkers' request. Amelia and Grace took Alex under their wings and taught him how to walk, sit, and overall carry himself more femininely. They demonstrated how to move his hips, keep his back straight, and take smaller, more delicate steps. Alex initially felt uncomfortable, but with their guidance, he slowly started to pick it up.
As his mannerisms improved, they moved on to his tone of voice. They coached him on how to make his voice higher and softer, and how to speak with a more feminine inflection. Alex practiced with clients over the phone, and gradually got better at it over the course of the week. Even though he was uncomfortable, he managed to pull it off and thought this was very manageable. He wasn't too worried if this is all that they meant by being a "woman."
However, Nancy wasn't happy with the progress. She thought it was taking too long and worried that the new marketing strategy wouldn't pay off by their big deadline.
Nancy explained that starting next week Grace and Amelia had to kick it up a notch.
Amelia suggested that using a new name for Alex might help him get into a more feminine headspace.
Nancy agreed.
Grace suggested that Alex go by the name Alexis, but Nancy said that it was too close to Alex. Instead, she announced that starting next week, Alex would only be referred to as Chloe. Amelia and Grace mentioned how pretty the name was and how fitting it was.
Alex, feeling embarrassed, didn't agree with the name change but kept quiet.
Nancy then explained that just a name change wasn't enough. She said, "starting Monday next week, Alex, or should I say, Chloe, must come to work wearing women's clothing.
Alex pitched up in an annoyed tone, "but I don't have women's clothes and I wouldn't even know what to buy!" Alex started to panic.
Nancy responded firmly but in a joking manner, "Watch your tone young lady, I'm sure we can figure something out. Besides, this seems like a much smaller problem than losing your job don't you think?"
Alex, now scared, remembering his job is at risk, looks down in embarrassment.
Amelia interjected excitedly, "Don't worry Ale... I mean Chloe, I'll buy you some new clothes over the weekend, and drop them off at your place Sunday morning. I'll organize them by outfits to help you out. Coordinated outfits are a very important part of being a businesswoman. You can't just convince men with a pretty face and a good argument!"
The girls all laughed.
When Amelia arrived Sunday morning, she surprised Alex with a spa day. Alex didn't know what to make of the situation and was hesitant but remembering that his job was on the line, he accepted. He found the idea of getting waxed, a mani-pedi, and hair extensions a bit too much but tried his best to go along with it, thinking it was what he needed to do to keep his job.
