Kit aggressively rubbed at the skin on her right arm, her left hand holding firm to the knife on her hip. Her eyes looked out the window, but they would peek at the men in the front seat. The tension in the enclosed space was so suffocating it was as if they were trying to kill one another without lifting a finger, despite the carefree attitude the two men pretended to have. But Kit was dumb; she noticed their tense shoulders and the dark looks they shared before getting in; she even noticed Merle's eyes not leaving her from the side passenger mirror. So she figured if she had to act, it was best to sit behind the man with a knife for a hand. She heard bits and pieces about merle dixon, and to say she was less than thrilled to meet her foul-mouthed friends' brother this way is an understatement. And Martinez was a wild card, and she doesn't like the unexpected; he would be easiest to dispatch from this angle.
"My brother-"
"Was perfectly fine and lacking a shower the last time I saw him. like I told you ten minutes ago." Kit cut him off. Ignoring the dull ache that had once again clawed its way up, the whispers reminded her it was Daryl Dixon who lost her; it was Rick Grimes who abandoned her. Merle only huffed in annoyance instead of arguing with her again over her attitude.
Her eyes widened slightly as she saw a partially walled area up ahead. Several people were moving vehicles out front to form what she could guess was a perimeter, and others were drilling large sheets of metal to their sides. "It ain't much, but it's something." Martinez piped up, rubbing his small patch of hair on his chin, the car slowing to stop as they neared a tall man with short hair, his hand waving as greeting as both men got out.
Kit hesitated before following, once again eyeing everyone, looking for a threat. "Hi, Welcome!" the man said rather loudly for Kit's liking, her eyes snapping back over to the well-kept man approaching her. " My men here said they found you clear over in the red zone. So now, for my people's safety, I gotta ask what were you doing there?" he asked, stopping less than a foot away from her.
"Waiting," she answered bluntly.
"For?" he leaned forward expectantly with an all too charming smile
Kit's eyes narrowed on him before flicking back to merle and Martienz, who were standing behind him and facing her, the others only half working to pay attention. "I got separated from my fami- my group." she swallowed hard. "I was waiting to see if they would come thru town."
The man hummed in thought as his eyes drifted over her form, suddenly making her feel self-conscious. "I am so terribly sorry to hear that." he said finally "we all know what it's like to lose loved ones here," he added, putting a hand on his chest. "Now, where are my manners everyone here calls me the governor." he leaned closer to her. "But you can call me Philip," he whispered with a wink.
"And you're in charge of this place," she asked, her eyes again going to the small cluster of buildings behind him.
"yes, ma'am" he puffed out his chest.
"My name is Kitten, but everyone calls me Kit." her eyes flicked back to merle as soon as he started laughing.
"The hells kind of name is that? You an animal in the sack, too?" he grinned, wiggling his eyebrows.
" The kind a druggy parent thought up. From what I hear, you may know something about that Dixon." she smiled back, feigning kindness, cocking her head to the side.
His face scrunched up, red with anger, "Why you little bi-"
"Now, now, let's all play nice." Philip held his hands up, chuckling. Now per protocol, we have to take you to the infirmary and get you checked out before we decide anything else."
"I'm fine." Kit insisted, her eyes locking back with Philips
"Yes, you may think-"
" I was a doctor; I know so." She said firmly, her eyes narrowing at the condescending edge he had added to his tone.
"Huh, well, I'll be. Isn't that just lucky then." he whistled, looking back to merle and Martinez before looking back to her "you can never have too many of those right now. well, how about we get you settled and we can get all the final details laid out tomorrow?" Kit stiffly nodded in reply, Philips's eyes briefly looking down at her weapons, But not saying anything.
"Well then, welcome to Woodbury Kit; I look forward to meeting with you again tomorrow." he grinned, stepping to the side. "Merle, why don't you show this lovely lady to one of the free rooms." Kit pursed her lips as her eyes once again locked with Dixons; she said nothing as she walked forward, the man turning to lead her.
"I gotta say I don't remember seeing you in the group when-"
"I showed up when Rick and your brother went to get you." She cut him off again, her eyes looking to the gate in the progress of being built as she walked thru. "How did you even get here?"
Merle chuckled "almost didn't. They found me damn near bled out, starving, thinking to myself a bullet might make a good last meal. Take myself a nice long nap after."
"Rick didn't mean for that to happen. I've known him my whole life; he went back for you."
Merle snorted, stopping abruptly, and turned to her. "Yeah, and why is it you're here then?"
Kit swallowed hard and looked away " we got separated." she defended
"Nah, hot cakes, you got left behind just like I did, face it." he snarked before turning and walking again. Kit followed in silence, choosing to focus on the older brick buildings instead of the whispers. When they finally did reach her room, she was impressed. From what she could see, the whole place had electricity; the room itself was very plain, with a full-size bed, dresser, chest, and what she hopped from all the tubes was a functioning shower.
"The shower-"
"Works, yeah, but you only get cold water. it's good for when-""Yup, I don't need to know," she said, dropping her stuff onto the floor beside the bed.
She sighed looking around before facing him again. "For what it's worth, I really liked your brother. I hope he's okay too."
"yeah, he's always been the sweet one, my baby brother."
"Well, i would exactly say sweet," she mumbled, looking away and clearing her throat. "Thank you, merle. For bringing me here," she added.
Merle nodded to himself, turning to leave her room before pausing and turning back to her. "Say when you got separated did deputy douche bag and queen peg board make it out?"
Kit turned her head back to him, confused "who?"
"Bane or somethin, and Lori had a boy."
"Shane. He was murdered the day before the herd came." Kit said, taking a deep breath
"Damn shame for a kid to lose his dad like that." merle huffed
"What?" Kit chuckled. "Carl isn't Shane's, he's ricks kid, and he got out fine."
"well, i'll be. Isn't that just karma." merle whistled. "He leaves me cuffed to the roof while his old lady is banging another in the woods. Oh, that is good!" he laughed.
"Lori. fucked someone in the woods?" kit repeated, now thoroughly confused
"Yeah, that shane guy-" he abruptly lost his breath as kit slammed him into the wall he was next to, her hands shaking as she stood chest to chest with him.
"What the fuck did you just say?" she asked, her voice low and threatening as he swore the woman would explode right in front of him.
