Chapter One

I've decided that the universe hates my happiness. I was happy when managed an A- in English last year, now I'm lucky to maintain solid a C. I was happy when I had my first boyfriend in 8th grade, and I haven't had one since. And, I was happy laying peacefully in my bed, but the universe, yet again, decided against it.

My alarm went off, playing some crappy pop song off the radio, ruining my chance of sleep. I despised that radio, even if Aunt Vee had spent a fortune on it. I pounded my fist against it, desperately searching for the snooze button. Much to my dismay, the auto tuned voice continued to assault my ears. I was so not in the mood for this! I grabbed the alarm clock and hurled it against the wall. Aside from the resounding crash of the alarm's impact, the result was silence. I slumped back onto my bed, tugging the covers over my head. Just as I was about to close my eyes, Aunt Vee's voice pierced the beautiful silence.

"Adeline, what was that? Are you ok?" Her voice was followed by her footsteps coming up the stairs. I continued hiding under my blankets. My door creaked open and Aunt Vee's footsteps came even closer. "Adeline, are you still sleeping! You have school in fifteen minutes an-", she paused. I heard her cross the room, and I peeked over my covers. She was standing over my alarm clock, or what was left of it. "Adeline Ameeda Silver, that is the third one this month, I am done buying you things if this is how you're going to treat them!" I looked up at my aunt. Her blue eyes narrowed, glaring at me. I pushed the covers away from me and jumped off my bed. Closing the distance between us, I threw my arms around my aunt.

"Auntie, I did the world a favor today", I said, gesturing at the mangled, mechanical monstrosity. "That radio was pure evil, it took away one if the few joys I have in this world. Sleep." I glared at it, managing a straight face, despite my own hilarious-ness, while my aunt was chuckling at my seriousness.

"Cute kid, that was real cute. Clean that up and be down in ten for breakfast." My aunt walked it of the room shaking her head and chuckling silently. I grinned, having skillfully avoided Auntie's wrath, and shot the clock's remains into the trash.

Then, I grabbed a towel and jumped into the shower, and after about five minutes of lathering, rinsing, and repeating, I came out smelling like my favorite soap, mint and rosemary. I towel dried my long, blonde hair and decided to leave it down today. My hair was naturally straight with a slight wave, so it wasn't too much trouble. Plus, after brushing through it a few times, it was actually kinda pretty. After, I brushed my teeth, then I went to my dresser, pulled on some undies, then got dressed in a pair of dark jeans and a white v-neck with silver designs and love written across the front. I slipped into my fuzzy, mismatched socks and a pair of high tops, then I was running down the stairs, following the smell of bacon and pancakes coming from the kitchen.

Aunt Vee was sitting at the table, two plates full of food already there. She smiled at me and said, "Eight minutes and thirty-four seconds, a new personal best." I beamed, it was kind of a game we played, I tried to get ready as quick as I could and Aunt Vee timed me. It was actually a lot of fun and I was pretty good at it, if I do say so myself.

"Hurry up and eat, I only have about seven minutes to get you to school, and its snowing! That'll be fun to drive in", she said sarcastically. "Aunt Vee, snow is pretty, don't be so negative", I chided.

She rolled her eyes and told me to shut up and eat. My stomach growled, seeming to agree with her, so I started shoveling food into my mouth. After I was done, I cleaned up the table and put the dishes in the dishwasher. Aunt Vee had the car warming up, so I threw on my coat and grabbed my backpack off the couch.

"Addie, are you not going to wear your contacts today, or did you just forget? Not that I mind, it'd actually be a nice change if yo-"

"Oh, I knew I was forgetting something! Thanks auntie", I cut her off, then ran upstairs to grab my contacts. I had perfect vision, the only reason I wore contacts was because if my eye color. My eyes are naturally a really vibrant purple that Aunt Vee loved and hated that I covered up. The colored contacts I wear make them a really dark shade of blue. I actually really prefer the purple color too, but I get so many weird looks and questions that its really embarrassing. In elementary and middle school, I was a loner, and the fact that I had freaky eyes only gave the kids another reason to tease me. But now that I'm in high school, I actually have friends and I wear contacts, so now, not even the stuck up kids mess with me, because I'm a lot tougher now too.

I ran back down the stairs and out in the garage where my aunt was waiting in her car. Although I was legally allowed to drive, Aunt Vee wouldn't buy me my own car, and she certainly wouldn't let me drive her precious baby. Her car was a sleek Corvette, with glossy silver paint and a black leather interior. She had an awesome stereo system too. My aunt was pretty cool and she was still really young; she looked it, too. She had platinum blonde hair without a hint of grey, a perfectly clear complexion, was model skinny, had bright blue eyes, and a contagious smile. I had always thought she was really pretty, and wondered why she'd never been married. I'd have to ask her later.

I popped open the passenger door and hopped in, setting my bag on the ground. Then, I turned on the radio and started singing along. Aunt Vee smiled and pulled out of the garage, humming along with me as she made her way through the snow.

It took about five minutes until Aunt Vees's Corvette was parked in the lot in front of Maytown High. I leaned over to kiss my aunt on the cheek before grabbing my bag and getting out of the car, careful not to slam the door as I went. I walked slowly towards the building, enjoying the chill and the light snow in the air. When I got into the building, I still had a few minutes until the first bell would ring. Most of the others kids were just socializing, so I continued to walk aimlessly, searching for something to do.

After about a minute, I spotted Lily talking to some random jock over by her locker. Lily was one of my best friends, an awesome redhead who was crazy, outgoing, eccentric and a total book nerd, but not in a bad or lame way. She was really cool and I'd known her since middle school, she was one of the few people who didn't tease me back then.

I walked over to her and tapped her on the shoulder. Being the nerd that she is, she spazzed out and went into random ninja defense mode, accidentally whacking jock-dude in the face. I burst out laughing while Lily glared at me and went to apologize to the dude who was cradling his eye with his hand. Lily was flushing red and asked the guy if he wanted her to run to the office and get him and ice pack. He brushed her off and mumbled something like "see you later". I just kept on laughing because the the look on Lily's face combined with the jock's macho facade was comedy gold.

"Look what you made me do! I just scared him and its all your fault Addie, you know that right!" Lily said, pointing and accusing finger at me. I stopped laughing, and looked at her questioningly. "Who are you and what have you done with my Lily?"

She proceeded to stare at me like I was insane, so I went on. "The real Lily doesn't care what people think and rarely associates with jocks, so either your an alien or android impersonator"..." or somebody has a crush", I ended in a mocking tone, grinning as I saw the blush in her cheeks. "Lils, why didn't you tell me, I would've been your wing-woman instead of interrupting you two like that if I'd've known! So, yah, technically this whole situation is your fault for not telling me about him!"

Lily rolled her eyes at me and just continued to sit there blushing like and idiot. "Lils, I'm sorry for embarrassing you. I really didn't realize you were gonna go all ninja on me!" At that, Lily burst out laughing and I knew I was forgiven. She smiled and said "C'mon you freak, let's get to class." With that, she looper her arm in mine and we walked together down the halls like the pair of freaks that we are.
