Chapter Four
As I walked toward my desk, Alix grabbed my books and carried them to my seat for me. I smiled as he walked ahead of me and them moved to pull my chair out for me. Wow, and they said gentlemen didn't exist anymore. Before I made it to my chair, a pink high-heeled boot shot out directly in front of me. I looked down at it with distaste, then stepped over. Had she really just tried to trip me? What was this, second grade?
Alix chuckled, his crooked smile plastered across his flawless face. I sat down and he pushed the chair in behind me before sitting in his own, next to me. Sage made sure that every five seconds, I received a hate-filled glance.
I stared Sage down. I wouldn't submit to her like I had before. The memories came back to me, all painful. In third grade, after Sage, Sam and I had been friends for since kindergarten, Bella, Sage's cousin had came and everything went to hell. Bella decided I was trash and Sage, along with the rest of the school, had followed. Bella had left so long ago that I barely remembered her, but even after she left, I was still cast out. Sam and Lily were my only friends. And the worst part was, I hadn't stuck up for myself. I just took it. Eventually, the bullying stopped and I was simply ignored, but there was no way I was going through that again. This time, I would stand my ground.
I glanced over at Sage. She glared at me, green eyes narrowed, glossy lips twisted in a snarl, and her thin, pointed nose turned up. She looked fierce. She was as determined to make me miserable as I was to get back at her. Every bad name she'd ever called me and every sneer, glare, and scowl I'd received because of her treachery would be repaid in full. I didn't waver, I kept my face blank, void of emotion, knowing how unstable I looked and how much it would effect her. My eyes bore into her, through the contacts I wore because of the way she had made fun of me, hate pouring out of me.
Still, I didn't break eye contact. Then, something happened that I would never forget. It started small, subtle, but sure. The slight furrow of a penciled-in brow, the twitch of a manicured finger. But as I studied her further, I realized something I wouldn't believe if I hadn't seen it myself. Sage was squirming under my gaze. I, the purple-eyed reject, had the queen of Maytown High shaking in her designer boots. Then, I let a smirk creep over my face. Something came over me then, a feeling I always remember. A chill ran through my body. Something electric, heart-stopping, and slightly terrifying. It was dark and dangerous and unlike anything I'd ever experienced before. I loved every second of it. I let it run through me and overwhelm me. I was finally getting the revenge I deserved and I was only getting started.
When class was over, I handed in my papers then left. I noticed Alix following behind me, but neither if us said a word. The next two classes went on with similar circumstances, but with the absence of Sage. I didn't talk, and neither did Alix, but it was a comfortable silence and there was no awkwardness between us. We walked and sat together all throughout, but I was shocked when he followed me in lunch. I had assumed he only stayed with me because I was the only one he knew, but now he had the option to go off with his own family, and still, he stayed.
I walked down to the table in the back of the cafeteria where I'd sat for the past two-and-a-half years. Sam and Lily sat waiting. They were deep in a conversation about the winter formal when we sat down. Lily was going on about what dress she was going to wear and Sam was actually listening because he was just so sweet like that. I sat down next to them and they suddenly stopped, staring at Alix.
I looked over at him, his lips pulled stretched in his signature crooked smile over his perfect white teeth. "A winter formal, huh? When?"
"Oh, um, it's, uh, December 20th", Lily stuttered, stumbling over her words. Wow, she was totally helpless in the presence of an attractive male. Sam was really the only guy we hung out with, and we were used to him, so, despite his good looks, he didn't really have an effect us. Lily really would need me as a wing-woman is she anted to stand a chance with that jock.
