Chapter Six
I stayed in the shower longer than necessary, letting the water warm my skin, scrubbing the tears from my face and the steam cleaning the fear out of my lungs. When I got out, I felt better. I dried my hair and body and stepped out of the bathroom. The sun was up now and Lily still lay in my bed, sprawled out under the gold-colored comforter. I laughed quietly and went to my dress, grabbing some clothes and dressing in black skinny jeans, and a navy blue long sleeved shirt. I brushed through my hair and then went downstairs, closing the door quietly and letting Lily sleep.
Aunt Vee was already in the living room, the tv on the news station. "Hey Addie, no school for you today, yah know. I can't believe we're already having a snow day! Well, what are to doing up so early? I usually have to drag you out of bed."
Aunt Vee and I laughed, remembering yesterday. I'd never been much of a morning person, unlike Aunt Vee, who was a total early bird. I sighed and just said I couldn't sleep, not going into detail. "Well, why dot you go up and wake Lily, we can go out for breakfast." I smiled, about to go upstairs when I was interrupted by a shriek, compliments of Lily. I ended up shooting up the stars at record speed, wondering what else was going to go wrong. I flung the door open, surveying for danger, then realizing there was none. Lily sat on my bed, bouncing around like a psycho, but besides that, everything was normal. No explosions, no wild alligators, no radioactive mutants, ad no black haired demon ladies. "Lily! Where's the fire?" My voice went up and octave and I was slightly out of breath. I had just sprinted like an Olympic medalist for her, and for nothing?
"Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod Addie you won't believe this! This is insane, it's the best thing that ever happened to me! Oh my god, what am I gonna wear, I-I- oh my go-"
"Lils, chill! What is going on!" I swear Lily was gonna give herself an aneurism. She hasn't taken a breath since she started her ramble! I swear this girl was mentally unstable.
"I, Lily Elisabeth Markus, have a date today with Zachary Trevor, the hottest guy on the football team! Can you believe it? Oh my god!"
I simply stood there, mouth hanging open. Lily, the little red headed fire cracker of a girl who fizzled out around any attractive guy. She had a date, her first date, with Mr. Macho Jock Guy? Wow.
"Lily, oh my gosh, where are you going, what are you gonna wear? God, we've gotta get you ready!"
I grabbed Lily's hand and we shrieked in unison. Then, she started rambling on about her date. He had offered to let her stay at his house while her dad was gone, but she had insisted she was fine he. So, he said she had to at least let him pick her up and hang out with him for today and it would be a surprise where they were going. God, this girl could talk. She just went on about Zach and I sat her down in front of my vanity and then went over to my dresser. Then, I pulled out an outfit for her.
I loved using Lily as my dolly since she was so prettying she fit into all my old, smaller clothes. Her outfit for today consisted of my black ankle boots with a slight heel, a pair of dark skinny jeans with back pockets covered in tiny silver and gold designs and little bedazzled jewels. And the shirt was a cream, off the shoulder top.
When I set the clothes out for her, she suddenly stopped her rambling. She looked worried, a slight blush on her cheeks as she looked down into her lap. "Addie, I don't know about that. I don't think I could pull that off like you could." She avoided eye contact with me, knowing I hated this side of her. Lily had serious self-consciousness issues. She had such a beautiful face, and she was model skinny! What girl could look like that and not feel good.
"Lily, please, just try it on. For me? And I swear if you don't like it I'll grab you something else less... Uh, showy." The outfit really didn't show much skin, but it was a little form fitting. Lily hated how she had no curves. She was such a tiny girl, but she was so skinny and pretty that you didn't even notice. She sighed, grabbing the outfit and went over to the bathroom.
I took the opportunity to sit down at the vanity and look at my own reflection, searching for what it was the Lily felt jealous of. I was, if course pretty. I was confident in my looks, unlike poor little Lily. My nose was slim, my lips plump, and eyes were of course vibrant. Lily had all of this, gorgeous red hair, and eyes that were stunning, yet didn't cause embarrassing stares from strangers. If anything, I should be jealous if her!
The opening of my door caused me to turn my head in Lily'a direction. She looked gorgeous, her long legs looking looking taller in heels, and the copper tones in her hair contrasting against the cream shirt that clung to her small frame. But still, she looked awkward and uncomfortable in her own skin. "Not a word of protest. You wear that and I promise you'll have Zach tongue tied. You look great Lils, you really do." I finished, almost pleading with her to be more confident. Finally, she gave in, but still looked unsure. I beamed at her, hoping my smile was reassuring.
Next, I sat her back down at the vanity and got to work on her face and hair. I brushed her hair out, then straightened it. Her hair framed her face and hung down past the small of her back looking longer and even more lovely than usual. For her makeup, I added some blush that contrasted beautifully with her pale skin and simple gold eyeshadow to bring out the flecks in her eyes. I added some mascara to frame her dark teal colored eyes. Alix, I suppose, was right. She would look great in blue-green. But still, she looked nice now, too.
When I was done, and looked Lily looked in the mirror, she seemed astonished at what she saw. Then, as she tried to blame her good looks on my makeup skills, I practically yelled at her. She looks amazing without it and all I did was build off that. We argued back and forth, but she refused to listen to me. Eventually, Lily left me alone, going off on her date.
Besides breakfast with Aunt Vee, I was a shut in. It was a Friday night and I stayed in, alone. It was like this all weekend. I had no idea what it was, but I didn't feel like myself. I stayed in my room, avoiding Aunt Vee. I even ignored Lily's calls, answering only once to say I was sick as an excuse for her to leave me alone. The feeling I felt, I realized, was the same crushing emptiness that haunted my dream. Without Lily to distract me from it, I was feeling its full effect, and it was just as horrible as I remembered. The fire left, but the pain never faded. I didn't eat, sleep or do practically anything unless Aunt Vee forced me too. She was so worried, but I blocked her out, wanting to be alone. If it really was me that caused the person from my dreams to feel this emptiness that I felt now, I could understand why they hated me.
On Monday, Aunt Vee forced me to school. We didn't play our getting ready game, it seemed pointless now that I didn't want to go anywhere. I wanted to sleep, to stay in the state of nothingness that meant I could escape. But, I got up, not bothering to dress up as I threw on some clothes. Then, I ate only the bare minimum of what Aunt Vee forced onto my plate. Before I left, I went to put in my contacts, but paused when I noticed something abnormal. My eyes were no longer a beautiful, bright purple, but dull and dark, almost black. They looked exactly like how I felt.
As soon as I stepped out of Aunt Vee's car, I noticed something that stood out. On the far end of the lot were two unfamiliar cars. One was a large red truck and the other wasn't even a car, but a red motorcycle. From here, I could see Arabella, Jaxin, and Kayde walking towards the school from the truck. And perched on the motorcycle was Alix. I stood motionless, alone in the lot. It was Alix who made his way over to me.
There was no emotion on his face. He just stared at me, his eyes looking deep into my own. Once he reached me, he paused, then brought a hand to me face, and softly stroked my cheek. Right then, right there, he was the only thing that mattered. A warmth spread through me, filling the emptiness that had consumed my body. I could feel the sparks igniting my skin under his touch, spreading all across the surface and then deep into my bones. The crooked smile that decorated his face only made me melt more. "Alright Sweetheart, lets get out of here."
