RINNNNNNGGG RINNNGGG

Amelia's annoying alarm jolted her awake, but she was still tempted to hit snooze and stay in bed. With bleary eyes, she fumbled around her desk until she found her phone and silenced the alarm. She knew she had to get up, though, so she dragged herself out of bed and pulled on some warm sweatpants and a long-sleeved shirt. A quick glance in the mirror showed her golden eyes looking back, and she couldn't help but shudder at how intimidating she appeared. After washing her face and putting on some makeup, she grabbed her earrings and pulled her hair back into a messy bun. She needed to go out and buy some new hoodies for the winter, but the thought of leaving her warm apartment on such a miserable day made her groan.

Amelia stumbled out of her apartment building, grateful that her roommates Ed and Em were out for the day. Checking her watch, she realized she was already running late for school. She jogged down the street, the cold breeze biting at her skin. Once her sleepiness caught up to her, she hung her head and patted her knees, hoping her classmate Boscha wouldn't leave without her. As she approached her broken-down car, Boscha gave her an annoyed look. "What took so long?" She grumbled.

Amelia hated that look. "Sorry, I overslept my pre-alarm. It won't happen again, I promise," she said, panting as she climbed into the passenger seat. The car was beaten up, with scratches and scrapes all over and worn-out leather seats. The horn barely worked, but it got her where she needed to go. Amelia settled into her seat, ready to face a long day at school

AMELIA POV:

As she trudged into her third period Chemistry class, the familiar dread settled in her stomach. It wasn't the subject she hated, not at all. It was the teacher, Mr. Jacobs, who always managed to make her feel like an idiot. With his condescending remarks and impossible homework assignments, he was a nightmare to deal with.

But before she could even begin to start her mental rant, the classroom door slammed open, causing everyone to jump. In walked Principal Bump, flanked by a girl she didn't recognize. The room fell silent as they made their way to Mr. Jacobs.

"Evening, Jacobs," Principal Bump said, his voice monotone as he handed Mr. Jacobs a piece of paper. The teacher's face paled as he read it, clearing his throat before Principal Bump left the room.

"STUDENTS!" Mr. Jacobs bellowed, interrupting the tense silence. "This is-"

As the screechy voice pierced through the quiet neighborhood, an old woman appeared from the house, fumbling with an earring. "Kid! No screaming!" she yelled, struggling to put the earring in place. "Bien, Lo siento," she grumbled, knowing she was always getting into trouble with her loud mouth.

Before she could say anything else, a set of keys were slammed on her forehead with a piece of tape. "Thank...you...?" she said, slowly peeling the tape off.

"Also, Lucia," a woman's voice interrupted her, cupping her cheeks. "Don't cause trouble," she warned, pointing a perfectly-manicured nail at Lucia's chin. "Bye bye!"

Lucia watched as the woman, Eda, disappeared into her "Owl Cave," a small shed in the back of the yard where she spent most of her time tinkering with her owl-inspired inventions. Despite her rough exterior, Eda was one of the few people who had shown Lucia kindness in this new town. And for that, she was grateful.

No one POV:

"STUDENTS! This is-" Lucia's heart was pounding in her chest. This was it, her chance to make a good impression. "- Lucia Noceda." As she looked around the classroom, her eyes locked with Amelia's. Blight couldn't hold her gaze and quickly looked away.

Lucia couldn't help but notice Amelia's fiery red face. Amelia took a closer look at her, admiring her caramel skin, brown hair, and hazelnut eyes. Lucia was wearing a green jacket over an oversized black shirt with Azura on the pouch and thick black sweatpants. Even though she was a giant, at least 6 feet tall, Amelia found her attractive.

"Hey-ho, I'm Lucia," she announced, breaking Amelia's train of thought. "You can call me Luci if we get on good terms, maybe, actually no. I play basketball and I can have a good time~" She punctuated her statement with finger guns.

Amelia couldn't help but blush at the sight of Lucia's confident smile. She knew she needed to focus on her studies, not on the fact that the new kid was super tall and attractive. "Get it together, Amelia," she scolded herself silently, tilting her head up to the ceiling until Lucia sat down next to her.

This cant possibly get worse, right..?
