For the rest of that day and the full day afterwords, Ellie didn't leave her bedroom unless to go to the bathroom. She cried for most of the day, feeling as if she had lost a big part of her heart when she watched Ghost walk out the door. She couldn't even muster the words to ask him to stay, or think it over. She just watched him go just as every other person in her life did. Maybe that's why she hadn't chased him, because she had already expected it.
Ellie texted Ghost a few times to try and get him to answer, ask if they could talk it through, but he never even checked her messages. While she waited for his messages, she spent time either on TikTok or Amazon buying things for the baby. Her credit card bill was going to bite her in the ass, but it helped her mood a bit now that she had something to look forward to.
After Ghost had still not read her messages, Ellie gave up waiting around dinnertime and had a small snack that she had brought to bed before falling into a fitful sleep wearing the hoodie that still smelled heavily of him.
On the second day after Ghost walked out, Ellie managed to get herself out of bed and get breakfast. Her little one needed nutrients, laying in bed with nothing in her belly wasn't good for him or her. Gathering two eggs and slices of ham, Ellie boiled the eggs and pan fried the ham.
She ate in silence, not even bothering to look at her phone as bite by bite, she got the food down. The only sound in her ears was the heat pump kicking on and the fan moving around. She put her dishes in the dishwasher when she finished and went to lay on the couch to watch TV.
It wasn't much better than her bed, but at least the kitchen was a lot closer this way. Ellie spent the rest of the morning watching movies to try and distract herself from Ghost, but she admitted to herself that she missed him. She hoped that he was okay, even after all that he said to her.
Around two in the afternoon, Ellie got a knock on her door. Confused, she got up to answer it, a hand rubbing at her baby bump comfortingly. Her deliveries wouldn't be there for at least a few more days, and she wasn't expecting food or company of any kind. She didn't even bother thinking if it was Ghost.
She opened the door and stared blankly at two strange men that stood on her doorstep. "Can I help you?" she asked, her voice devoid of any emotions or excitement about being a mom.
"Is Simon 'ere?" the one on the left asked in a heavy british accent. He had short dark brown hair and brown eyes that looked almost black. He had a straight nose and a rounded face that looked odd on such a skinny body. The other man looked just as odd, with a long face and nose shaped like a bird beak, his eyes were close together and made Ellie feel slightly uneasy.
"You've got the wrong house," she answered.
"I don't fink we do." The two men both pulled out 9mm pistols and aimed them at her from their pockets. "Where is Simon Riley?"
Surprising even to her, Ellie barely even flinched at the weapons as she asked, "Do you know him?"
"Ol' friends."
"Doubtful, Simon had no friends."
The left man rolled his eyes. "Ol' army buddies, then."
Ellie looked down at the weapons, and yet she couldn't bring herself to be concerned. This depression was starting to get to her if she wasn't even scared of two men on her doorstep pointing guns at her and her unborn child. "Let me rephrase it," she said, looking up at the two men. "If you're looking for him, he's not here. I doubt he'll be coming back either, so you're just wasting your time."
"And why not?" the man on the left barked angrily.
"Well, by the looks of it, you two have been stalking my home." Ellie gestured to the guns with her head. "You know he's been here, and if you've been watching for a while, then you would have seen him storm off a few days ago."
